5w30 Semi oil was used to service my car..

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I noticed that the guys who serviced my car used this in the PD engine...I always though VW specified 5w40 was the one to use...

The car already needs a top up after I had it serviced a month ago....Is it ok if i top up with 5W40????

Cheers

you should only use the pd 5w40 semi synth, or 5w 30 longlife iirc so theyve used the wrong oil

FFS! Any advice??? should i flush it out???

One of the many issues I had with a certain chain of servicing centres was that their invoice said they put semi-synth in my car, although the service manager swore blind they defer to their supplier's website (Castrol) and produced a chit from their supplier dated that day for 5l of Castrol Edge. Similarly, you may find that the invoice says one thing while the stuff actually in the sump says another...

I can't see that topping up with the RIGHT stuff will cause a problem, even if your sump is full of the WRONG stuff. It's not going to react or anything like G11 and G12 coolant will when they're mixed.

If you're at all worried, though, a drain, flush and refill is the only way to be absolutely sure I'm afraid...

Had same problem with a CR 170, invoice was for wrong oil, when I queried it I was told the right oil had been used but the invoice was wrong. :wonder: :wonder: The sump washer had split and the car returned for a new plug and washer. They then said they had changed the oil at no charge. If they had saved the drained oil and put it back in there would have been trouble.

dont panic too much , i know its a pain to have to drain/refill but its the only option if your not 100% sure! but i wouldnt think it would do any harm for a few miles, its after a few thousand that id worry emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Just rang the garage, and they insist the mechanic who i rang earlier was wrong and that he meant 5W30 long-life... :wonder:

I'm just surprised after a full service a month ago that the oil warning has come on already.

Not fussed about spending decent money on top quality oil for my cars. Will see what happens :)

I've had a dealer quote the wrong oil on an invoice... though mine was really obviously wrong (forget the details) and the assured me it was just an invoice issue.

It was the lady on the desk who actually typed up the invoice as it was to a quoted price so pretty sure she just quoted the cheapest oil for cost reasons..

when it comes to oils, a lot of garages simply dont have a clue, or even if they do they dont give a toss because chances are no problems will appear in a short enough time scale that anything could land back on them

i work in the trade and let me tell you the vast majority of garages still dont understand that certain VAG cars need specific oils, the best they know is that they might need 'a synthetic'

personally mine gets done with oil i buy myself, or at the dealers whose tanks are filled with the correct stuff, Alex Lawrie in Liverpool

i used to run my polo with a pd diesel engine on 10/40 synth or whatever i could get my grubby hands on in the workshop for free on the day, and that was still going strong after 180k so i wouldn't panic yourself to death over it.. personally i would just leave it till the next service then stick the proper stuff in there then rather than going to the cost of draining it out and redoing it now
