New canon photo printer (Opinions pls)

Featured Replies

Well on old HPs with 9600 dpi the quality was more or less perfect. I got a Canon printer at christmas, which handels photo paper well, but the actual quality is very dissapointing. Black for example tens to come out dark blue and the fine detail is not great. The Epson that it replaced despite being lower dpi actually printed better pictures. The Canon wins hands down however fro speed, and text and line graphics print quality.

All in all of Canon, Lexmark, Epson and HP printers that I have experience of, I would favour the HP (although cartridges are expensive).

I use a Epson Photo R300 Prints pictures off my Minolta Gi600 (6.o pix) You can print directly off the printer it takes various cards. Ink is rather expensive. Also has a tray to print cd/dvd's

What is the quality like when you blow the pictures up ?

BTW Jessops ink cartridges are half the price of the originals but I don't know if they last as long etc.

BTW I wonder what dpi a 5.1 megapixel camera is ?

Anyone tell me ?

I purchased a Canon Pixma IP3000 just before Xmas.. So far it has been

a really big improvement from our old Epson Stylus C70.. It produces good photos and is a good at normal script printing...

Recommended but shop around.. I got mine from PC world as it was in the sale.. and about as cheap as the t'internet....

Cheers daz, may now look at the Pixma IP4000 as it looks like the dpi is limited but the Megapixel value anyway

See here for a good explaination, 300 dpi is considered photo quality.

I use an Epson 950, which gives excellent results -but the cartridges are viciously expensive. as was the printer. On the other hand, it does CD printing, and has roll feed and a cutter, so you can leave it printing a whole load of photos.

7dayshop do some cheap cartridges, which a friend is trying at the moment -we'll see how it goes.

Epson R200/R300 produce excellent results, and if you get cartridges made by someone like Jettec, they're guaranteed to be as good if not better than OEM, *and* are available at cheaper prices *AND* contain 30% more ink than Epson ones. :) I've heard good stuff about the R800 too, though that's a bit of a price hike.

However, if you're looking for a dedicated photo printer, rather than a colour inkjet, take a look at dye sublimation printers - same technology as most of the photo-kiosks use, and it not actually all that expensive(*). If you want more info then ask, but I'm not going to volunteer info as I don't want to come across as advertising, only offering advice... ;)

(*) Not necessarily that expensive, but then it depends what you want to do with it. :D

Can anyone suggest a good dye sub printer ;)

http://www.hi-ti.com/UK/ are a make who are getting a lot of critical acclaim... ;)

Sony, Canon and Olympus all do dye-sub printers which could be worth looking at too...

Rob.

Ivan, I got the R300 before Xmas and have printed pics taken on a 2Mpixel and 3.2Mpixel camera at A4. Results (as I'm sure Rob can confirm ;)) are excellent and all the colours seem to be true to real-world colours without having to do any colour calibration, etc.

I print onto "budget" photo paper I got from Curry's and the results are indistinguishable from the supplied Epson photo paper which is a lot more expensive. Oh, and it can print on white DVD's/CDs! :D

Mine seems to have a thirst for cyan and yellow ink so after 3 months of use they're running a bit lower than the other cartridges. I've just bought a full replacement set of 6 carts for 18 quid too, so running costs are very manageable :D

Really, I wonder if there is a problem with my Canon Pixma, becuase I am very disapointed with its photo performance. As I say it is quiet and very fast and has better text and line graphics printing than the Epson C42Plus that it replaced, but the photos come out very flat looking, with poor colour reproduction and relatively poor detail, especially with things like foliage on trees etc.

My SWMBO has been printing her portfolio off from her HND Graphic design course.. And the picture quality is really good... You might have a fault with yours... Or have you checked your settings?

Right well I use an Epsom R800 but things move on.

Results are great on A4 even from simple CF in, click print.

Has archival ability aswell so no fading.

I'd also liike to suggest somthing which has been missed thus far...that of on line printing. I use photobox, this allows you to upload pics and publish, frends can order prints and alike. The prints are very good and max size detirmined from the source. It was a very close call between me getting the R800 and the not getting it but use photobox all the time.

I decided to get the R800 but have mayby printed 30 pics tops...Will print more when I get round to decorating so I can display my so so pics to myself in my own stairwell gallery :)

Hope that helps.

Try Photobox, it works out quite cheap really if your just after pics, especially if Mum wants a copy etc.

Chris where did you get the Carts from ??

Definitely a good alternative if you want pictures as you would've got them from a developing service...if you're an enthusiast and like to tinker into the small hours of the morning though, it's not so good and you don't get the prints instantly.

Also, once you take delivery into account, it puts the price per-print up quite a bit!

Rob.

Was actually

Another  for photobox here -a friend recently had some A3 size pictures printed by them, and the quality is excellent. They were 8 megapixel images from his Canon 20D, though, so the original image was good.
