anyone weighed there wheels?

Featured Replies

just been doing something sad, but obviously changing set of wheels will obviously affect handling if the wheel is heavier i.e more unsprung mass = slower acceleration and less mpg which i have noticed when changing. Really looking into some lightweight alloys for a few summer roadtrips i have planned as would like the improved mpg for the milage i would be doing circa 5k in a month so obviously the more out of a tank the better. Anyone know the weight of a 15" Pro race 1.2 with tyre.

Current wheels are

15" steelies which weigh 39and a half pounds with tyre which is 17.9kilos

and 18" LCR alloys which weigh 44and a half pounds with tyre which is 20.1kilos

and for 5pounds per corner difference i noticed a 5mpg drop in ecomony,

I was very suprised how heavy the steelies were lol

My Evolos are pretty heavy (they are 8 inches wide) but they look too good in my opinion :D

Ask Jason (devonutopia), I know he played about with this a little bit.

7.0 x 15 weighs from 6.1kgs (13.4lbs) according to Rimstock, guess the from part is because different tyre=different mass(?)

just had an email from demon tweeks they reckon a 15"pro race 1.2 and tyre will be around 11kilos, thatll be saving 6kilos a corner hmmmm

i went from standard vrs alloys to 17 inch octavia vrs alloys (Spiders) and havn't really noticed a change in mpg although i do think acceleration and grip were better on the standard alloys.

Mmm.. Acceleration and economy.. Who needs traction :p

Wheels weigh nothing in comparison to the tyres! Tyres Rolling resistance have more effect on fuel ecomomey, so if your after economey go for 13" x6" wheels!

Bear in mind a different width tyre, and even tyre brand will have a noticable effect on MPG as will tyre pressure due to friction. The difference you are noticing will not just be down to weight. Your speedo and thus MPG calculation is set to the wheel circumference of a standard wheel and tyre. With the smaller wheels your car's computer will be registering a slightly longer distance than you have actually travelled. With the 18s your computer will be registering that you have travelled a slightly lower distance than you actually have. That in itself could account for a decent bit of the 5mpg discrepancy. The larger wheels give an effectively higher gear ratio (albeit not by that much) as for each revolution of the engine the car will travel a little further. Possibly beneficial on a Motorway. Finally, the larger wheel will run over smaller imperfections in the road more smoothly than a smaller wheel, thus creating less friction (though if your car has low profile tyres it wil transfer more energy beyond the wheel into the suspension negating the benefit).

Just a few thoughts... no doubt you know some of this already.

Pro race 1.2 arnt that light!

I run 18" Buddy Club P1's on TT, which look very chav, but lightest 18's you can get without getting forged mag stuff.

on mine its the other way with the 15's the speedo is 2mph out at 30mph reads 28, with the 18's its pretty much spot on only 2mph out at 70 whereas the 15's read 65 the 18's are 68. So really the trip computer should be reading less distnace travelled with the 15's then the 18's, and tank to tank i was getting circa 50miles less with the 18's on same trips etcs

Quite a few of the Speedline range are pretty lightweight. As can be Compomotive. Depends how much you want to spend :)

Most of the available stats are for the wheels alone. I've never weighed any of mine with tyres on. My 8x18 Speedline Turinis weigh 8.75Kg wheel only for example

Whats the widest and lowest profile you can get on the fabia for 15's?

I know my superleggeras (17*8) weigh 15.9 lb / 7.2kg which is damn light for the size and width. The weight database I have on excel doesn't have any Skoda oem wheels on it though.

In terms of TD Pro Race wheels. For the same dimensions, the pro race 1 is actually lighter than 1.2. Eg 17*7.5 = 8.3kg for pro race 1. 1.2 weighs 8.98kg for same size.

So your 15s have a larger outer circumference than your 18s? Eeegads man! What profile tyres are you running on the 15s? :o

My Porsche twists were heavier without tyres than my bbs lms are with. And the whole car feels like it moves lighter. Can't wait to get my coilies on

I regret selling my Pro Race 3's, they felt half the weight of my Spiders... Lifting up a Spider took a lot of effort compared to a Pro Race 3. :(

I run 16' pro race 1.2's and the car feels a lot more sprightly. In this day and age of rip off fuel, diesel and lightweight wheels all the way.

it surprises me that it really does make that much difference, but is it noticeable really? emoticon-0148-yes.gif

I find it really doesnt and I thrash my TT on the track, as soon as you put tyres on you can hardley feel the difference in weight. As I said before try and go smaller tyres/wheels. So if you can get TT 312 brakes under 15s stick with 15s!

That's why I stuck with 16's instead of the usual 17's

I might have missed something, but has any one actually weighed the original vrs 16" alloys? Or know the weight?

Sadley I thourght as much. Il just go for 288mm then as want to stay on 15's.
