Info on breaking a car.

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

just as above really, I am gonna start breaking this mk1 Octavia vRS today and just wondered:

1, who needs to know? Ill be sending the tax in to get 2 month back I hope but what do I need to tell them? what authorities need to know?

2, Its looking like Ill be taking everything off the shell and then grinding it into smaller parts to let this fella that comes round asking for scrap metal take away. will he do that? and is it fairly easy to do with a small angle grinder?

cheers

billy

You cannot send the tax back until you have declared the car SORN,

it must NOT be broken on the public highway,

You must once the shell has been broken (including the shell being destroyed) notify the dvla that the car has been broken for spares by completing and returning the appropriate part of the V5. Because until the shell is broken and the VIN effectively lost then it would still be possible to put the car back on the road.

If you fail to tell the DVLA the car has been broken up, then you will still be liable for telling them every 12 months that the car is SORN or face a fine each year.

Have good neighbours, eg. ones that will not complain about having a dismantled car in the street.

You can tick the SORN option on the form you glue the tax disc to when claiming refund

Most scrapyards/metal recycling places will deal with the V5 side of things when you weigh in the shell for scrapping (even if in bits I guess). I know a previous client of my work did this - they actually had an uplink to the DVLA so it could be done instantly. :)

damn no thanks button again lol

There is no way you will be able to cut the shell up with an angle grinder, i broke a mk4 golf last year and we struggled like hell then gave up cutting it up with a industrial sthil saw!!!!!!!
