vRS noisy start

Featured Replies

Hello I am new to this forum stuff, I previously posted this before, but in the wrong forum. I have a 2002 Octavia vRS. When starting first thing in the morning sometimes there is a clattering / rattling sound from the engine for a second or too. At times it sound quiet alarming. Previous suggestions included it was the hydraulic lifters, or cam chain. Does anybody else have any thoughts and should I be taking it back to the Skoda dealer for repair?

Dont worry they all do it from time to time, its lifters i believe, there is a thread about it somewhere (something like "things not to worry about" ) as long as it stops in a couple of seconds i really wouldn't worry :)

my vrs does the same!!! the dealer tells me its a feature of the inlet fan on the air box, something to do with emission controls, add that to hydraulic lifters etc etc and yep its not quiet, "is it a diesel" has been asked a couple of times..

Mines only got 850 miles on the clock and I've already been asked "is it a diesel" (when starting from cold)

:o

Ok here is the article i mentioned clicky hope this puts your minds at rest :)

Go back to your dealer and tell him that the pneumatic secondary pump that send exhaust gases to the cat. on start up, needs replacing. This part is not a skoda part it is an Audi part and this fault is common on the Audi TT and should be fixed under warranty. If you need any info contact me cheers!!!!!

Hello. It's been back to the dealer and I suggested it could be the secondary pump or the cam chain damper. But the dealer says there is nothing up with it. If that is the case why has this noise only appeared in the last month or so, I have had the car for over 6 months and it is new 2.5 years old. Any comments

I could just be to do with the colder weather. You will always get more noise from the hydraulic tappets in any engine on cold starts in colder weather conditions.

Ok....this may be a possible cause...but it may also not be.

Best to take it back to your garage and if they give you no joy go to another one. You can PM any of our resident technies, Ross Clarke or Big K, but something like this needs to be seen/heard unfortunately.

Recently I have noticed that I don't get the start up noise if I park the car on level ground or if it is parked nose down. The noise only seems to be there if it is parked nose up. Should this make any difference?

Perhaps this is due to the hydraulics tappets i.e. no/not enough oil when on unlevel ground.

I think I may be experiencing the same noise. Its a more unpleasant souond than just the noisy lifters and actually sound worse once in gear and being driven but only lasts for a few seconds only happens on a cold start and it doesnt happen every time.

Took my Octy VRS in to Pillings because the start up noise had got a lot louder over the past few weeks. Definitely sounds much louder than it ever used to and lasts longer than a few seconds. Only does it once on first cold start. However, all is well and it's the air pump working. Must be the colder weather. Maybe it will resume normal noise level once weather gets warmer?!

My vRS has been back to the dealer again !!! This time because of poor running when cold and the engine noise. They think it could be the secondary air pump, but will change the components until they wittness the porblems themselves. This is a major pain. If everything is pointing to the pump being the problem, why won't they change it under warranty. Customer Service !!!!

This happens on my Octavia vRS too, it makes a clattering sound from the enigine, if I give it some gas it dissapears, seems only to be there initially on start-up, and when the engine is running slow, i.e slight pressure on the accelerator and the engine is clattering internally, give it some gas it dissapears.
