Who says VAG are going to lower the Superbs quality?

There are many rumours that VW aren't happy that they are losing more lucrative sales to Skoda which have lower margins than the equivalent VW.

It's been rumoured that VW may force Skoda to drop standard equipment from various Skoda models making them optional extras. For example, the Leather trim and sat nav might become options on the Superb to make the equivalent Passat Sport with sat nav and leather as standard, a more desirable purchase.

I must emphasise this hasn't been officially announced by anyone and that they are merely rumours at present but it makes the most sense if VW want to redress the balance. It may well turn out that VW may not take this course of action and may hold back on allowing Skoda access to the latest technology, engines and gizmos.

It'll be a shame if they do, the Skoda brand is on a roll at the moment, specifically at beating parent VW at it's own game emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

That would be a massive faux-pas on VW's part if they did. When I ordered my new Superb I also seriously looked at the Passat cc. Many features the same, but the Passat didn't feel as good to drive, was more expensive and didn't have as good a spec as the Superb.

VW should look more closely at their own products before having a pop at Skoda. Although if I were the head man there, I'd be happy that one of my companies was still racking up good sales in this economic climate.

As for the Superb being an old man's car? Never, more a wise man's car!

Comes down to what you wanna be, do you wanna be a

sardine or a shark

poised or relaxed

Classic tortoise and the hare story, only the tortoise isn't so slow these days.

passat and superb are fairly similar. superb looks better, IMHO. passat has some extra nifty options (such as adaptive cruise control). for me, the balance was tipped by price and looks.

I'm 35 and my Superb Combi Elegance is on order, hopefully being built next week (bw5) B)

Mines a DSG, and I have been told by my Sis'-in-law that I'm not old enough for an "auto" (I refrained from trying to explain the differences between and "auto" and the DSG!!! )

Anyway, I certainly don't consider myself old, or the Superb Combi DSG an old man's car for that matter... it's a great load-hauling, camping-gear-swallowing, house-removal-capable machine, with a stonking 170bhp diesel motor and a "superb" gearbox B)

Maybe VW should take note, that if skoda are out selling their passats, then maybe they should reduce the price of the vw models in order to compensate the loss of people who would have bought passats before skoda came along...after all its a no brainer that todays drivers want value for money and demand a decent car with good specifications, at a price that is attractive and the car that looks good.

Just shows you that VW doesnt stop to think that maybe one day the likes of skoda and seat will one day be keeping the company in profit, whilst their own brand passats costs them money....so do the decent thing and leave skoda out of it !! and maybe drop the ugly passat :giggle:

I read it the other day in an article in Auto Express where the comparison was made between the Passat Estate and the Superb Estate, the Superb came out on top. In Comments appended to the article was this :.

" Not so superb according to VAG

There is a lot of gossip around that VAG are reducing the very popular 'finish' of the Superb because it was eating sales of the Passat! Of course VAg will not confirm or deny this but have a squizz at Skoda chat sites!!.

According to the Auto Express article, the Superb is only £120 cheaper so I'd say that there's not too much to worry about, especially given the price rises effective 1/1/11 which are over and above the vat rise. Need to also bear in mind that the Skoda's are probably subject to the local Czech currency rather than the euro which will help the price for the UK.

I'd also suggest that all vag subsidiaries will have to get HO approval in terms of spec and price, and if that's so, expect massive price rises and spec cuts on Audi A3 models as I know several people who have gone for spec edition A3's over similarly priced Golfs.

The article says :-

"The icing on the cake is the price – the £23,255 Skoda undercuts the slower and less well equipped VW by £120.

the important words being less well equiped, and at least over £900 has to be added to the Passat price just to equate with a few options which are standard on the Superb, see that part of the article on the individual vehicles where comment is made re that. And the comparison was made between the 130 Passat and a 170 Superb.

Anyone else think its an old mans car?

As one of the more senior citizens (at 65), I tend to be a little more worldly-wise and look for traditional values, not necessarily value for money. These values include good build quality, comfort, space and equipment - so the Superb II was ideal, ticking all the boxes. However, I'm a "progressive" driver and a test drive showed me that this requirement would not be sacrificed either. In 2004, we started looking at Audi A3, then discovered the Octavia Elegance (same power train, better specified, less money), so the Superb was a natural progression, I suppose.

It's certainly this old man's car, but no-one I've driven in it, or shown it to, has made such a comment. Even if they were to, I think it would interest me about as much as Jordan's next marriage. :)

I saw a 'new' Passat today as it goes....

Really, really boring looking car emoticon-0114-dull.gif, the Superb has much more character, especially at the front. The Passat just looks like any other VW clone.

Same thing with Audis, its getting harder and harder to tell them apart when they are sitting right up your ass on the motorway. The A4 and A6 Avant are pretty much identical at the back and the new A8 is a fat A4 clone, the A7 just looks plain ugly, the rear lights look terrible and the door mirrors are clumsy looking.

Getting back on topic, I would still take a Superb over a Passat any day of the week.

Couldn't disagree with the proposition more.

I'm 34. Got a superb saloon model because it's the PERFECT family car. Super-sized and super affordable. I drive the greenline model for income tax reasons as it's a company car.

I'm 26 and i got my new Superb 170 TDI DSG Elegance in november.

People just LOVE IT!.........Except passat owners, offcause. B)

Interesting thread. Seems the average Superb owner is pretty young - not what I'd have suspected (apologies). And perversely the perceived Škoda lifestyle activity car that is the Yeti seems to have a far higher average age again! Shows you how much Marketing knows!

But either way they are both excellent cars showing the relevant equivalent VAG Passat and Tiguan who is boss!

Oh dear - confusion reigns! Yes, the Superb IS an old man's car: I'm 68 and have one on order. To make matters worse I drive a Passat 3.2 litre V6 Fourmotion (brilliant, very fast, very comfortable, very well-built and in my opinion very nice looking), and a Maserati Quattroporte (ditto, ditto).

No way is it an old man's car. It is pure "stealth" for the thinking middle aged driver who does not need to prove anything.

I am 50 and I still love my cars to perform well, handle well and look good. The Superb does it all. I would not change it for anything else out there.

I agree. This evening a 5 Series Beemer was behind me and I left him at two roundabouts, however, he then overtook me on a long straight before being held up in slower moving traffic. For interest, I checked the Superbs dimensions against the 5 Series and ofund it virtually the same length as a 5 Series, but only the width of a 3 Series.

The Superb is a far better long distance car than my previous Octy. Last month I travelled 4,729 miles in my Superb and the car is currently 25 months old and nudging 70,000 miles.

Rubbish my sister as an 08 5 Series Bmw and my Superb looses it for cabin space , boot space leg room front and back and most of all the boot + Superb way better drive

A comment on the Passat V's Skoda thing. I think VAG will trim the Skoda down as it goes against the German marketing principles which is to sell a reasonable base car and make the real money on upgrading it in the showroom. All the German manufacturers that I have come into contact with whether car or other products have this mentality, if you want to buy it then pay the money, of you don't buy something else. Every German manufacturer I know of works this way so VAG will just be bringing Skoda into line with the rest of the group. One thing they will not do is drop the build quality as the group philosophy is build the best cars in the world as far as build quality goes.

In no way is it an old man's car, especially when you let the V6 rip at the lights against some nob in the next lane that must think that the twin double pipes must be fake (not that I make a habit of this - just occasionally) !!

My wife owns our one and we are both in our 30's. we love driving it. bit under powered as its the greenline but best buy in years for us.

saying that my MKII vRS Combi TFSI is still the best... :)

The Superb is not and old man's car or a young man's car - it's a bit of both. Its driven by people of all ages just like almost every other make and model on the road. I see quite a few old people bumbling around in Fabia VRSs but I wouldn't brand it an old persons car.

As for interior space - there isn't much out there that beats it. My colleague has an Insignia Tourer and despite very similar exterior dimensions, the Superb absolutely canes it on interior space.

That you are one old person does not mean the Superb is primarily a car for the elderly, which it patently is not due to the messages throughout this thread. And as to your blowing the trumpet for the Passat V4 Fourmotion, I guarantee the urban mpg is horrendous, how does it compare with the Superb equivalent btw?
