SKY Anytime+

Featured Replies

Has anyone got the latest SKY Anytime+ I see it's being rolled out and would like to take it up, but really need a wireless dpngle. I gather SKY do one for £60 but assume there are other bridge devices that will work just as easily. I also don't know if my Amstrad box will work with the new Anytime+ as it's about 20 months old and I don't even know if the Ethernet port works ? Anyhoo, anyone got it?

I have SKY broadband, but the router is upstairs (hence I would like WiFi) and reasonable speed circa 13mbs.

If you have Sky BB then wont they supply you with a wifi router? I have Sky BB and didnt pay for mine.

I have SkyBB too, and a Sagem F@ST router. Infact, I lie, I have two of them. The first one was naff, and the second one a bit better. EItherway, I did not pay for them - thankfully.

Depending on the size of your house / flat, you should be able to get a wireless router and dongle for less than what Sky ask (assuming you don't get one free when you change package). IME, Netgear is best, but my in-laws have Belkin which seems OK too. I'm sure there will be others that contradict me, but if you're just using it to access the internet, there's no point in getting wireless N stuff over and above wireless G stuff since anything considerably over your broadband speed (13Mbps, you say) is wasted effort IMO!

HTH

Don't forget that the Sky routers are 'tied' to them so it also makes it awkward (but not totally impossible) to get the login details for a different router.

I think, perhaps due to the late hour of my posting, that I wasn’t terribly clear. I have Sky BB and with its wireless router, I need a bridge device to connect my Sky HD PVR to that router in order to gain access to Anytime+

I could always drill a hole in a ceiling!!! But I prefer to stream the recordings through the ether emoticon-0100-smile.gif

SKY's bridge device looks suspiciously large too

Oh right.

I moved our wireless router into the sitting room so I could hook it up to our Freesat box for the iPlayer (although it keeps hanging when you exit, so we're still watching on the Wii despite the dire picture quality...)

Not noticed any appreciable difference in Wi-Fi reception about the house, apart from on my eBay Android tab, which has pants Wi-Fi connectivity anyway! :D

I have had no problems in extracting my connection details. Interestingly enough both routers they sent me had different usernames & passwords.

I would have though you just need a bog-standard wifi AP then..... (even a spare router would do, just turn off DHCP, and ignore the WAN side of it).

So do guys think I can buy a regular bridge type dongle jobbie, shove it in the Ethernet socket on the SKY box and with a bit of tinkering, get the ability to download Anytime+ ? I am suspicious that the SKY adapter looks rather big, like it is up to something more than just being a cheap Belkin dongle

Sorry about the incorrect use of terminology guys :(

You understand in an absolutely spot on fashion :) I've seen those things advertised a lot, so they work well?

I have a few sets of the Devolo 200mbps AV homeplugs. I use them primarily when I am at my parents (stupidly thick walls), and to get internet down in my garage at home, they seem to work well. They don't always seem to like being plugged into extension leads though.

I've been using them for some time - a cheap pair from Ebuyer give me about 75 Mbps around the house.

...there you have it!

Nice :) Thank you

I guess my concern would be, is there some functionality that the SKY bridge device offers that you wouldn't get with a third party connecting device? I suspect not, as you can plug you SKY router straight into the back of the SKY HD box.

So the next question would be, has anyone used the new Anytime+?

Ordered my new 1TB box and will see about a bridge/mains-distribution/ bloody-long-cable, solution for the Anytime+

One bit of interesting news is, the Anytime+ service isn't in HD :(

Tried to sign up for Anytime+ but even though I have a Sky+HD Box and Sky BB Unlimited I can't activate it on my account.

The HD Box I have is an Amstrad one with an ethernet port on the back but apparently it's not compatible yet.

That's the same box I have and having spoken (at length ......unfortunately) to SKY about it, they say it is compatible. The only thing is, they are only just rolling Anytime+ out to certain customers. The way the very young man explained it to me, sounded like they are rolling out some sort of Beta version. Anyhoo, I wanted a bigger box and so it isn't money wasted :) I did ask if it would eventually be rolled out as HD rather SD, but they didn't seem too hopeful about it.

People could show their interest in Anytime+ around 6 months ago or maybe slightly longer so it could be that they are going through those people first???

Isn't it cheaper to just upgrade the HDD yourself rather than buying the 1TB box?? ;)

Cheers

Dave.

we got a 1.5TB box late last year and started using Anytime+ 2-3 weeks ago, both are good  the new box is quieter, smaller and faster than our original Thompson HD box, it also looks a lot nicer too :D Anytime+ is handy, there's a decent selection of content available and whilst you do have to start downloading before you can watch a program, it's pretty quick

Would be interested in this. If it didn't require using skyBB. Will just have to d/l the old fashioned way. At least that way it can be HD.

Why cant any ISP be used, or is just another hook into their own stuff?

My box has been pretty hammered so having a working spare seems a nice idea :) plus there are more digi outputs on the back of the new 1.5TB box than my current one. I like the optical and coax digi O/P and smaller size of new box :)

So an update. Not sure if anyone will ever see this post as Brisky seems to be playing up at the moment, but fingers crossed.

I now have my new 1.5TB Sky Box, which I self installed almost seamlessly (the instructions about the initial update are a little vague at one crucial point). Everything seems to work, including my remote record. I plugged up my Sky Bridge WiFi device, instantly was prompted to connect to a router and enter my password. Bingo! Instant access to Sky Anytime +. It works seamlessly too, simply select say a movie you would like to see and off you go. It downloads a few mgbs for it’s buffer and then plays, as it downloads and stores the film on your Anytime partition. Picture quality is only SD but you can view all sorts of catch up stylee tv.

But the really interesting question is, does it work with a switcher. As it happens, like most people, I happened to have a spare little switcher lying around and plugged it up. Once I had put the SKY box into port 1 instead of port 5, my Anytime worked as before :) then I stuck my Humax into it and tried the ‘Portal Button’ and after a dozen aborted attempts, it connected (perhaps it did a download during this time a it sounded busy). Not much on the portal yet, but BBC iplayer streams faultlessly and the internet radio works very well.

So the answer to my earlier question of, will the bridge device let me access the router through a switcher, has been answered……..YES! :) :)
