KEROSENE/HEATING OIL

Featured Replies

Hi had a delivery of heating oil today not red diesel, the delivery guy said that you can use this stuff to run in a diesel with some additives thrown in redex?,is this true at 54p a litre could help the wallet!!

Makes me laugh, when i see the extent people are willing to go to save money.

I guess in the last 3 years fuels gone from around 120p/litre to 135p/litre. over a 35litre tank of fuel its only £6.75 extra each tank full. I probably lose that in loose change each month :wonder:

If its so hard, why dont you all go and buy the greenline Fabias and get 80+mpg instead

Same money we try, help the bank balance it does if I can fill a car for £18.90 saving slightly more than £6.75 over 12 months I think its quite a few quid about £300 ten tank full of fuel

Depending on the mileage you do it makes a big difference over a year...Some people are really struggling at the minute and £6 makes all the difference

I was talking to a big cool chain haulier last week at work who uses 40,000Litres of fuel per week

Kerosene will burn hotter and has less lubrication properties and it also jumps in price during the seasons and was 80p + Per Litre over christmas. It was been delivered throughout East Anglia on Christmas/Boxing day while they can demand the hiked prices

There is a lot of heating oll being stolen down here in Dorset, so much so I am concerned about the tank I have in the back garden here. OK, the house I live is down a track and any vehicle out of the ordinary stands out like a sore thumb as only 3 cars normally travel down the track. The thefts are being blamed on the cost of diesel, as its aparently easy to modify heating oil for use in diesel cars.

Heating oil a few months ago was less than 40P a litre, and now at more than 80P its more than doubled the cost to fill the tank in the garden.

Heating oil 54p litre here and there's a lot being stolen,NI would like them to try and nick mine 2 rotti's would eat them alive:giggle:

You might also want to check out the implications as it maybe like vegitable oil based biodesiel in that you have to delcair it and pay duty for use in a motor vehical.

Also you might want to check the flame temprature of a kerosene flame compaired to a desiel flame.

Yes its a bit illegal and it burns hotter,is that not a bad thing :giggle: apparently some people are using far more often than we think, the astra 1.9 diesel used to run perfect on straight veg oil no changes required.

If you pay the duty, there is nothing illegal about it at all. If.

For many years at my family home, our deliveries of heating oil always had in big red writing accross the bottom "Not for use in motor vehicles". Ran fine in my Turbo Diesel cavalier, either mixed with vegetable oil or not.

Legal ramifications aside.....

In my industry (aviation) you would be amazed how many engineers run on Kerosene. It doesnt burn hotter, in fact it runs just fine. The only downside is that it has poor lubrication properties. Kerosene is mid way between petrol and diesel in the cracking process. Provided you mix it with regular diesel in smaller quantities you are fine. The addition of about 300ml of JASO FC or TC-W3 spec 2 stroke oil will achieve the lube requirement if you want more kerosene than diesel.

I dont do this, as I have a DPF and I am unsure of the sulphur content in Kerosene which would over time kill the DPF. I will say that when I worked 'oop north' most engineers where I worked ran on kerosene for years with no issues at all.

A diesel will run on almost anything that burns. You could use neat 2 stroke oil or 25 litre drums of cooking oil....it will run. It may play havoc with a modern engines sensors and crucify a DPF but thats progress for you.

If you fancy some extra economy you may consider 'envirox'. Google it, its been tested in the real world by hauliers and bus companys with positive results. Doesnt work well with high sulphur fuel but as ours is ULSD its proven to give 5-10% improvement. Its easy for me to say try this stuff but I wont be using any additive or alternate fuel in mine until out of warranty........chicken, but thats just my view.

Another up and coming additive is envirocat. Up to 14 percent mpg improvement. Neither of these are snake oils or cleaners. Its a Cerium based Nano powder in suspension that acts as a catalyst.

Its tempting to use Kerosene . I have access to hundreds of free gallons of the stuff................If I didnt have the Greenline I might just have weakened and tried some.

Forgot to add, Kerosene is really just another name for parrafin..........Kerosene is pretty much fuel oil as found in domestic heating.

Janner - I agree with you ;)

I thought it was completely illegal to run on heater fliud as a person i worked with got pulled over at one of those vosa mobile check stations where they dip the fuel and he got an on the spot fine im not sure if it was a grand or £500.

They didnt even ask him about tax or anything.

And your right about the less lubrication, he carried on running with it and his injectors seized shortly after.

Ok if you are spending money on a higher spec model but base models are around half the price of a greenline. Also, if you are not worried about losing dosh, thats fine but if I were you, I would get a pair of trousers with decent pockets... The cost would be outwieghed by the saving in just a few months.

BTW, a greenlone wont really get that figure... I average around 50mpg as a driving instructor but I have made trips doing 80mpg but over a year, my other figure is more honest! I am now paying around 13 notes extra a week to the government, for the pleasure of working to give them another 25% of my hard earned! Even if I found another student to cover the cost, one hour a week would give me around £17 but then, yup, you guessed it, more tax and more fuel costs! Angry O? :'(

I should imagine driver training is pretty start stop all the time. The mpg of a Greenline would unlikely be any different to a standard 1.4 TDI in this situation wouldnt you say ? A Greenline II with stop start system would save you a bundle ;)

I just got back from Chelmsford today, 140 miles. Nearly all motorway M11, M25, M23. 80.....ish all the way. 62.5 mpg. (thats taking 5 mpg off my trip computer which over reads). I havent yet seen anyone get a lot better than that even with the new Greenline II.

As for previous posts on tank dipping. They check for chemical markers put in with additive packs at the refinery. Its not the colour of fuel that gives people away its the chemistry. A lot of the roadside testers seem to crop up at big markets near us. Checking vans, never cars for some reason.
