"Making" room behind the HU

Featured Replies

With my imminent re-install of my Pioneer I'd like to try and create a little more room behind the HU for all the bloody wiring and stuff that comes out the back of it. I never managed to click the thing back before.

Anyone had a good hack with something big and sharp back there? :D

I had major problems clicking back my Symphony when I connected my RCA output cable for my sub. The trick is to tie all the cable up and use a rubber band to host the cables up and to the left, very tricky to do, get a mate to help, also remove the glovebox to get access behind the unit it is still limited access but better than none.

I wouldn't start hacking anything behind the unit in vain to get better clearance.

Using a large pair of wire cutters I got ride of the support plastic thing behind the HU and then dremel-ed the back of the tray just below the HU.

That gives you enough room for 4 RCAs, headunit adapter, bus cable and 4x12gauge speaker wire. That's enough for most installs I think.

The thing with the Pioneer is there's a chunky black box attached to one of the yellow wires... I assume its a fused unit of some sort, but its a real pain in the ass when it comes to taking up room behind the HU. :grumpy:

I will see what I can sort out - the laggy band exercise might be worthwhile, and I'll take some freezer ties to try and keep the wiring all together.

I have a Pioneer DEH-P77MP and didn't hack anything about. I poked the lump in the cable through the gap in the left hand side. What I did find useful was a thin metal ruler slid in around the unit. I kept it there to keep all the cables out of the way, right until the last moment when the unit clicked home.

Trouble is the "lump" is about 2" square :( But I shall try this method. Mine is the DEH7600MP I think, with the motorised flip panel thing... Compared to my Kenny its got about twice as much "bulk" behind it...

But I shall give your tip a try.

Are you getting creative Jason? Just seen this in your recent ebay purchases:

Didn't have you down as a seamstress!

I had this problem when I was connecting RCA to the back of my Alpine HU. I found it easier if I removed the glove box and the airvents above, by doing this you can move a lot of the cables out of the way by pushing them to the left to where there is a gap, you are also able to make sure there is no cables in the way of the hole that the rubber bung on the back of the HU goes in to. When I finally get round to amping the speakers properly, i'm going to cut the speaker cables of the wiring loom.

Hope this helped. :)

I still can't get my HU to click home... It's maybe 1 or 2mm out.

Grrrrr

I've tried loads, but because I have the cubby draw, not the hole, I just can't get it sorted.

****es me right off!

You can put that down to a colleague at work who hasn't got the faintest idea about signing up to ebay, so she just sits there and occasionally shouts out 10 digits to me, to bid on for her... I don't mind as she pays and I get the feedback! :D:cool:
