Gents

.just change fronts for backs and your soon see if sawing is back .

had problem for four years and still not sorted ......14 tyres and 6 wheel alignments later/

next step court .

if sawing has started then the wear will carry on ..if you have wheel alignment done then new tyres should be fitted .

If you do have alignment done make sure they dont adjust one side only as this seams to be a quick fix .

send bill to suk .

Why would they adjust one side only, any decent alignment place with the correct equipment should be able to sort it without having 6 attempts. I am on my 2nd vrs and have never had the saw toothing issue on either of them.

All I can tell you is what as happened to mine .because new tyres were not put on, sawing continued and after having alignment rechecked it was found it had been fully adjusted by skoda on the near side.

Why are you letting Skoda do a full geometry check? They won't have the right equipment. Go somewhere with a Hunter rig and get it done correctly once and for all.

Just wanted to endorse the point about realignment needing to be done on the right rig. Most Skoda dealers are too small to have this. I got through two sets of rears by 35000 miles. Skoda agreed to have it fixed. The car went to Jewsons in Oxford but they didn't have the kit so sent it to the local Audi garage. I've now done 57000 with no recurrance of the problem. Also worth mentioning that my problem tyres were Dunlops both times. I'm now on Avons and they are fine.

I have just bought a 2009 Octavia 1.6 cr Elegance with 26k on the click, non vrs. Would sawtoothing be likely happen on this model? Thanks in advance.

Salty

Hi Salty,

It's entirely possible. My car is an Ambient and had it. However if the car has got to 26k miles and the original tyres are still on you should be OK. Hope so, because I guess you are out of guarantee.

Michael L

Cheers Mike. I've just bought the car. The rear tyres are Goodyear Eagles so I imagine not the originals, seems to be quite a bit of tread but can't see any sawtoothing. BUT I do get the droning noise so wonder if the tyres were changed before I bought it. I did get a Skoda 3 month warranty as bought it from a dealer, do you think that would provide me any protection?

Looking for some advice on this related matter please guys...

I rotated my OEM rears (Michelin Pilot Exalto) to front and had 2 new Uniroyal Rainsport 2's fitted to the rear.

Ever since I can hear some form of droning but its only around 20-25mph and appears to sound like its coming from the passenger front tyre area. Too early to tell if its causing sawtoothing, no change to mpg, feels fine at speeds up to 75mpg. Had the car serviced soon after fitment and dealer said it was just regular tyre noise - it was not there previously though - and the tyre fitter said his work would not affect tracking...

Worth an alignment check and if any changes (is that possible) would Skoda pay?

Cheers

If there are two Goodyears and two OEM, the previous owner probably had them rotated. But if you have no OEM tyres at 26k miles I'd be suspicious. However if you can't detect saw toothing you should not have a droning noise. Run your hand over the tread forwards and then backwards (clockwise then anticlockwise). There should be no significant difference, but if it feels smooth one way and rough the other, you have sawtooth tyres.

Hi,

The famous Octavia sawtooth problem is on the rears not the fronts. You may have another problem.

ML

Are there any summer tyres you that dont have this sawtoothing problem on the VRS?

Its not the tyres

Its the geometry set up that needs altering brownfox

Thanks for the response Michael. There are two Goodyears and two cheapies they put on the fronts just before I bought it, so no original tyres at 26k I would say.

Definitely got sawtoothing, was able to check thanks to your description and the droning has continued. Called garage as under 3 months warranty. He said they've only had to adjust geometry for 3 cars, so we'll see what happens when I take it next week and they get it on the ramps. He did say there's problems with some tyre brands so I think he wanted to try that avenue first and see if different tyres resolve the issue. What do you think, can I insist on geometry our do I go down the tyres route bearing in mind I'll only have 2 months left of warranty to see if that has been the issue. I will do about 4,500 miles in those 2 months though.

Thanks, Chris

I would say you want both, a new set of tyres and a full allignment check on a Hunter (Or similar) rig so that there is no chance of the saw toothing returning.

Chris,

I agree with the previous post. Changing the tyres may work but you wouldn't know until the car is out of the guarantee. In my experience it takes about 7500 miles for it to show sawtoothing. It's essential that the tracking is done on the right rig to VAG spec. using the specifications sent out by Skoda a while back. I think they call it a TPO or somesuch. I'm assuming your dealer is a Skoda franchise so they should have received all of this info. If you scroll way back through this thread you will find the contact details for John Good at Skoda who is very helpful if the car is within Skoda 3 year guarantee. But even if it isn't he can advise.

Michael L

Thanks for the replies and advice. I think I'll give them the opportunity to replace the tyres and see if that resolves the issue but get some written confirmation that if sawtoothing returns, they will get it on a rig and sort the geometry out as I've raised the issue within my 3 month warranty. (The car is out of its 3 year one.) I think I've then been fair and given them a fair opportunity to put things right.

Also note that if the saw toothing does return you will want new tyres fitting again as well as the geometry sorting on a Hunter.

Good point. I'll make sure I stipulate that too. Thanks.

I had sawtoothing on the fronts as well as the rears.

Happy mid festivities!!

Update. Just been to the dealership. New tyres fitted free of charge (cheap but free.) They told me the settings seemed fine. I asked for a print out, he told me that there wasn't one! So my thoughts are to give them the benefit of the doubt and see how I get on with the tyres. If it reappears then I will be requesting more new tyres and an alignment check.

As a matter of interest, are people of the opinion that after an alignment check/adjustment that any tyre brands will be ok, or are people still avoiding Dunlop and Bridgestone?

Cheers, Chris

Chris,

The general opinion seems to be to avoid Dunlop. Some say Continentals are best and my Avons are also OK. It sounds as if they didn't do a full realignment on your car otherwise you would have a print out, so perhaps that dealer doesn't have the right rig. When my car went to Jewsons and thence to Audi, they had the car for two days. It's a big job. Rotate your tyres front to back every 6000 miles and you will prolong their life.

Good luck.

Michael L.
