Wiring Amp in furby

Featured Replies

Ok, so i've read and understood the guide on how to run a power cable from bonnet to boot. Sorted.

Question is, surely the battery need disconnecting to connect the +ve amp terminal up. Is this gonna fook up any security systems?

also, any tips on where to earth a boot mounted amp? Is there a convenient seatbelt anchor somewhere? (i get car next wk & am planning this power run out in me 'ed :nerd: )

Ta,

MPM :D

I disconnected the battery (I think its best) but I know of others who didn't. I had to put my clifford into valet mode but the factory alarm has no problems with disconnecting the power.

Earth point I used was the seat belt bolt just under the rear seats.

HTH.

There should be an earth point close to the rear speaker, behind the trim. It'll be a painted nut with a plastic crown surrounding it (the crown grips any wires going to it). The -ve from the speakers (brown wires?) should be amongst those going to it.

On my furby, it's on the left hand side as you stand behind looking into the boot.

Good good, so d/c'in the battery won't knacker the factory fit immboiliser codes then....

Earth point sounds about as expected.

Ta guys.

No, there's a little extra bit on the other end of the +ve terminal, with a 10mm bolt and a washer under it, which the ring terminal can go onto, and the 10mm bolt goes back on top - No need to disconnect any terminals. (maybe the negative one, just in case? I didn't)

The best earth spot I found in the boot was pretend to send your earth down to the spare wheel, but head back up inside the boot trim, and head to the boot mechanism... There was a nice fat bolt there I was able to secure the earth wire to.

Aha good point devonutopia!

Prob best to earth first, unplug inline fuse then wire into battery.

Wirin the amp was so much easier in me mini. Amp above battery, must be the shortest power run ever :P

I'd love to see someone try to shut the bonnet when doing this on a Skoda.

My wiring is a little complicated - I use two 4 way dizzy blocks, one to split the 4awg power feed three ways to each amp, and likewise to amalgamate (big word for a friday  ) the three earth wires into my 4awg earth wire which goes to the earth point described above.

If only I could get over the problem with the subs & comps being all intermittent when the volume is cranked up a bit. :(

An easier and tidier way to run your power cable is not from the battery itself. Use the end 10mm nut on the supply side of the fuse bus bar under the top cover of the battery. This means you can mount the fuse under the top cover and everything looks nice and tidy.

Ross, did you have to cut into the battery cover at all to make room for the cable? And also, did you fit any additional earth points to the battery negative terminal? Like the looks of that, going to be re-wiring my amp feed shortly and will probably go with this approach :D

If I remeber correctly I think there is a hole.. I will have a look

I had to cut a good section out the battery cover, about a cm wide, and a good 2cm deep, for the 4awg to poke through, and allow both covers to shut. :)

oopppss wifie is out in the car  will check tomorrow I didn't cover this in the amp wire how to..

I drilled a 10mm hole and just opened it out down to the bottom of the cover so it still looks neat. No additional earth wires fitted. Just used the rear seat belt anchor bolt as a good earth for the amp.

What gauge is the standard earth on the car? Somebody point me in the right direction if I'm going wrong, but surely there's no point in fitting a power cable thicker than the earth cable at the battery - as regardless of how thick your earth cable at the amp, it will be restricted by the thickness of the earth connection at the battery - unless it's 4awg or thicker at that end - presumably it'd need to be thicker as there will be other things drawing current through it (i.e. anything else electrical in use on the car at the time), unlike the amp power cable which just has the amp drawing current through it? Or am I missing something?

I only bring this up because I know when I fitted additional earth cables from the battery to a couple of extra good earthing points on the body of my last car, they improved not only the sound of the stereo, but the brightness of the lights, smoothness of the engine etc... even when the stereo was off. Which leads me to think that the standard earth wasn't hefty enough to cope with running the electrics of the car all that well, let alone an extra current drain with the stereo pumping...

No need to buy a kit like this though, pre-made earths from a motor factors or one or two constructed yourself from good quality cable and connectors would cost less and probably do much the same. Any thoughts?

The earth wire for the battery is directly below the red power wire on that picture (its cable tied to it) and it is near enough the same gauge.

Due to the power steering system on the Fabia has a hefty battery, alternator and wiring.

I think this subject may have already been covered here :)
