Attitude from other road users

Featured Replies

Between the two Superb's I've owned I've done about 12,000 miles so far. Generally speaking the response from other road users has been very good. Waves from other Skoda drivers, you get let out of junctions (where you might not if you drove, say, a BMW or a Porsche) and when I've stopped for fuel etc I've had several questions and positive comments about the car from other drivers. Fine by me.

Until yesterday. Joining the A1 Northbound from the M18 at about 6pm the road was lightly trafficked allowing for safe reasonable progress. I passed a line of slow moving heavies and came up behind another Skoda (old shape Fabia) the driver of which was sitting quite happily in the outside lane doing 65 mph. I was travelling about 10 mph faster than him as I approached and the inside lane was clear on his nearside for a good few hundred yards in front and behind. Would he move? Oh no! Now I'm not an aggressive driver and I gave him every opportunity to notice the contents of his rear view mirror by waiting patiently at a safe distance for longer than most people probably would have. He still wouldn't move so I gave him one quick flash of the main beam to politely remind him that the outside lane is for overtaking. Talk about lighting the blue touch paper! He immediately put his hazard warning lights on, braked, swerved left and must have virtually snapped his main beam stalk due to flashing me repeatedly as I passed him! He appeared to be trying to do his maths homework using his fingers as well. How sad.

Now why do you suppose this would happen?Jealousy? Possibly. Incompetant driver who felt the need to be offensive to other road users and would likely have reacted the same whatever I was driving?Probably. An isolated incident? Hopefully. Caused by or exascerbated by my actions in any way? Honestly no. My wife even wondered what was wrong with the 'gentleman'.

Now you may read this and thought so what, happens every day. Maybe so, but as I said at the beginning however, that hasn't been my experience with the Superb up to now so I was disappointed to see the above. Doubly so from another Skoda driver.

Made me wonder if my overall positive experience so far is typical or has anyone else had any bad attitude from other road users whilst driving a Superb?

Mark.

Wouldn't have matter what car you were in - the country is full of hand shakers on the roads today. It is terrible. Everywhere i go i get stuck behind people doing 10mph below the speed limit, sitting in outside lanes, not indicating, straight lining islands, pulling out of junctions in front of you after they have looked you straight in the eyes.

All of the above and more yet they are the ones that f, blind and flash their lights if you overtake them, pap your horn or flash your lights at them as if we are the ones somehow in the wrong...

My favourite at the moment is making people reverse back down the road when they think they have right of way passed a parked car on their side or a priority chicane....especially when i am in the works van! I'm not being sexist saying this either or maybe it is the times of day i am out in the van but i would say 70% of the people doing the above are women. Whether they aren't concentrating or are just pig ignorant i don't know....

I hate that! Sat in the middle and outside lane is really bad driving!

Police should be doing move about it, its because of these drivers there are tailbacks and accidents

Yep, I had a guy actually shout out the window to me "f**king pull over and we'll sort this out...."

what happened?

He entered a roundabout where there are 2 lanes in and 2 lanes out. You can go straight over the roundabout (so second exit, typically) in both lanes. He entered before us as he was in a queue waiting for the roundabout to be clear, he was in the outside lane. We approached in the inside lane and by the time we got to the roundabout there was no traffic to wait for, so we go straight onto the roundabout in the inside lane. Now as we were going a lot faster having not stopped we caught up to this guy just before mid-way round the roundabout. We are well within the confines of the lane on the roundabout. He however has decided that, at rush hour its fair game to be lazy and basically not follow the lane confines around the roundabout. As such he is now drifting across and straddling both lanes...... just as we are pulling along side. Now obviously the minute he suddenly realised there was another car next to him in the inside lane, shocked him. But was this his fault that he'd nearly drifted into the side of our car causing a crash? oooohhhh no, not by a long shot. What followed was agressive horn blowing, tailgating and by the next roundabout his window was down and he was shouting all sorts of crap and telling us to pull over.

He was clearly in the wrong, you dont drift into another lane without looking on the motorway, so why is it ok to do it on a roundabout at rush hour? it isnt. But he didnt think so.

I can't stand it when people sit in the outside lane when they are not overtaking.

I can't stand it when people sit in the outside lane when they are not overtaking.

I'd happily undertake a plonker behaving as above. And when I'm on 2 wheels, it's a whole new ball game.

Mk1 Fabias are often driven badly, especially the basic spec ones which seem to be bought by the "grey pound" and drivers who hold their cars in the same esteem as their washing machine. there are several in this area which have never been above 50mph and are running on tyres which still look like new at 30k miles!!

Privatly owned Superbs are usually bought by folk who have more than a passing interest in their cars and tend to enjoy driving them a bit more.

Granted there are several other "basic" cars out there driven the same way which is great for the dealers because since these folk are easy fodder for the dealers. (They can get away with telling them anything!)

I have a massive pet hate of people who do not indicate ! i think its rude and lazy not to mention dangerous

I'm a sales rep with National accounts responsabilities and as such travel 40k mile a year all over the uk

I am not the best driver in the world or the most considerate

but i have driven close on to 1million miles over the last 25 years

i have been caught speeding twice

and have had 4 accidents (all my fault i hasten to add !) ran in to somebody else once it was a customer !

But I always indicate, i look in my rear mirror every 7 seconds i always look over my shoulder both left and right when changing lane this is because the chap to whom i was an apprentice to was an ex police driver and made me drive everywhere once i got my licence, i reckon i had done 20k miles by the time i took my test

i would like to say i have seen it all crashes bangs skids etc but every day something new comes up to challenge you

yes ive been cut up, yes i have cut some one else up yes i speed who dosent but doing 80 on the motorway with the rest of the traffic and doing 40 past a school at 8.50 in the morning are two completly diffrent things

some of the worst driving i see is from the very old and the 19-25 year olds

one i saw the other day was a Polish wagon on the M5 in very slow traffic who decided he needed at that moment to be in the miiddle lane and thus manouvered so, the fact that there was a BMW convertable along side didnt bother him as he just drove up and over Her bonnet pushing her in to me, well he wouldve done hadnt i seen it and put my foot down to get out of the way

driving as much as i do you lots of stuff on the roads and i am sorry to say that nearly all of the crashes i see on the motorways involving wagons they are all foreign drivers

although the funniest happened to a mate of mine

again on a round about up in the Bradford area

basically he was in the out side lane and was pushed against the roundabout although no contact was made they came to a stop

Terry my mate then proceded to shout expletives at the Bus driver through his open sun roof

to which the bus driver replied

"is that your car ?"

my mate " yes"

bus driver "tint my bus"

and drove off

the general standards of driving in the UK are dredful but are we any better or worse than the rest of europe?

Without being picky, but I'm sure you mean the wagons are left-hand drive...

Have you driven a lorry? It's very very different to a car, and when driving on the "wrong" side of the road, things get very difficult. Your blind-spot is about 10 times bigger, and the congestion of British motorways doesn't make things easier for the truck drivers.

When seeing a foreign-plated truck (excepting Irish trucks, as they drive on the same side as you), the best thing to do is to give them a lot more space, and if when passing them, give 2 lanes width when necessary. This information is given by the police, and also recently during driving lessons it seems...

The french takes some beating....they simply hate an english car over taking them !! I've had the pleasure of being followed by some young lad in his citroen saxo on this super bit of highway and you could tell he was trying his darndest to keep up and get past me, and i thought i'll give you a chance and let him pull side by side and the wife gave him the finger and said floor it hehe...thinking that he didnt know anything about skoda superbs, his eyes must have been near some onions when i put the car into 6th and you could feel the torque and left him standing....not that i recomend doing that again, but it sure put him in his place with his spoilers and wide rear exhaust and fancy paint job, and giving him the message....get a skoda next time mate !!

I've got a RoadHawk Video camera fitted in my Superb - the attitude of drivers at present is atrocious

Morrison's almost had my rear bumper at a roundabout last week, as he has no idea what lanes are for in his 40 tonner, and a double decker Yellow bus almost pulled out in front of me on a roundabout, as i WAS using the Correct lanes!! - he thought i was going 1st exit, as most people dont drive the round about correctly! - maybe it's just me driving roundabouts correctly?!

But overall, i get some good looks from other drivers, even BMW, Audi and Merc drivers.

FFS.....

Hi

I have never driven a HGV and most of them i give the greatest respect to, i have driven a 7.5 tonne and that was difficult

but i do tow with a 4x4 and a 7.5 metre trailer with a boat on and thats bad enough

yes i do mean "left had drive" I am sure you see as bad from "right hand drive trucks" on the wrong side of the channel :)

but i will say this and it has been said on here before i have never known a car like the Superb that causes vectra/mondeo/etc car drivers who want to race you from the lights, into the gaps etc not sure if they want a closer look our just to prove that they are faster

Andy

I too am often grumpy when unexpectedly woken up!! ;) ;) ;)

Out of the last 10 accidents I've seen on the M4 at least one Transit van has been involved in each of them

Reading the Sun newspaper, smoking a fag and texting someone whilst undertaking another motorist, is all abit too much for the average builder these days. Beware....

Doesn't matter what or where you drive, you'll always encounter idiots driving all manner of vehicles equally badly.

In terms of attitude, noticed people would smirk and gesticulate at my last Superb, obviously because of the badge. I even had a Passat driving work colleague who tried to take the p***, he was put in his place with a quick spec vs price comparison!

That said, one customer did mistake it for a BMW, which made me smile! :D

Not encountering any real attitude in Borat, but will be interesting to see what happens when I take delivery of my new Superb.

How could a Superb be mistaken for a BMW. Skoda's have direction indicators as standard on all models, they must be extras on BMW Audi Volvo as they do not seem to have them, or at least don't use them.

<meanwhile, back at the original point> The Furbie driver was a ****; end of. What you were driving made no difference.

It's nowt to do with the car, it's modern day motorists who have moved the I always have to have my own way and you should look out for me whatever I decide to do onto the road.

With the outside lane @ 65 mph, he's breaking the law and being an uneducated road block.

The roundabout issue, 4 exits = inside for exit 1 & 2 outside for 3& 4, ain't rocket science, but then again with so many dim ppl in the UK now, both hoegrown and imported that still think it's a dirt road in Zambia etc it's no suprise.

My one desire, and I know you will think I'm nasty, and it's been in my mind for a very long time is to buy an old tranny or something in the Shogun range cheap, bullbar it and wait for the one who won't give way when they don't have the right of way and do a full side body mod on their car for them, where I live gratification should be ensured at least a dozen times a day.

Come and try driving in Northern Ireland - you ain't seen nothing yet. :o

I think the lack of indication is the worst especially at roundabouts. At one mini roundabout near to my home there are loads of bumps as hardly anyone indicates. Most drivers position their vehicles as if they are turning left and then turn right.Luckily I have not been caught out by this, but if you look at some drivers and point at their indicators you just get a lot of abuse.I just find people get aggressive when their errors are pointed out.Must be an arrogance thing.

The standard of driving in general in the UK is dreadful. There are some very good drivers but there are more that have no idea of how to drive, road position etc. I see a fair bit of bad driving at work and am amazed at some of it.

With the foreign drivers - make sure that you always give them a wide birth at all times. As one poster has pointed out they are mostly LHD and as a result they have the blind spot on the offside under the window unless they have one of those lenses fitted. Most of the collisions involving these HGV's on the motorway is due to this - pass them in Lane 3 if possible.

Anyway, just drive carefully and observe the road, try not to respond to idiots and you'll be fine. If someone decides to get angry with you just carry on and give them a nice wave, that way there will be no comeback if the authorities get involved at a later date.

Well it was stationary at the time. Believe it or not, BMW's do have indicators and as I found when I had mine, they even work!

Hang on...the standard of driving in the UK is terrible with most drivers not having a clue, but it's foreign drivers we need to watch out for?! :wonder:
