looking at replacing my craptop, it's for home use only and is basically only used for Internet. Was looking at these? Which ones the best?

any help would be greatly received as I'm not really into PC's, I normally just use whatever work give me. If anyone knows of nay better deals out there it would be a bonus.

The HP is about the best out of that bunch. I would try and stick to Intel processors for laptops in particular the i3 or even Core2Duo's as these are likely to be even cheaper (i3, i5, i7 has replaced Core2Duo),.

For the same money you could get this:

Or how about a refurb?

Basically i would avoid Celeron (these seem to kill the battery after arounfd 6 months) and the makes to go for are Tosh, Dell, HP and i would avoid Acer...

thanks for the advice, I will stay away from celeron. I do like a nice looking laptop so may go for the HP.

no prob - HTH. The link for the save on laptops one is a 17inch and HP and the same styling as the Currys one but not in red obviously...

If it's only for really browsing the internet, why not save yourself some cash and get something like this?

In the next couple of days i'm going to buy this:

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/acer-5742-core-i3-laptop-with-3gb-memory-black-laptop-08702353-pdt.html

The model I was looking at today in store was the Core i3-380m which gives you a few extra Mhz.

Feels a bit cheap but that's because it is!

If you are feeling particularly fruity you can also get it in red.

Unexpectedly PC World is actually the cheapest you can buy the laptop.

As i said avoid Acer! If you aren't looking for reliability then go and buy one otherwise look at a decent make....I work in IT for a council and schools as part of the contract can buy there own equipment (well used to be able to). By far the most reliable make was Dell.....the worst being Acer with at one school all 34 breaking within 2 years with motherboard failures. Various other schools that have the odd Acer or 2 have all failed too. With Dell i think i have logged a call with them 2 maybe 3 times in the 5 years i have worked there.

I've got a 2 year old acer that has been back for repair 3 times. It's now out of warranty and the battery is poop, it switches itself on and off and the fan is constantly on. I don't think I will buy another one mate.

My ACER lasted less than 24 hours! Just kept displaying the splash screen and failing to POST. Excellent machines, they really are. -_-

+1 for Dell though - mines about 4/5 years old, abused and bashed to pieces, but still fine, just reliant on mains power. HP seem ok, although cheaply built in my experience. (Had 3 - one the mouse failed twice, the other I can use the mouse buttons through the screen. :o)

Typing this on my new Acer I bought today :)

It's the same for everyone, One mans french crap Peugeot is another mans trouble free work horse.

I've a mate who swears by Sony and hates HP, another one who swears by HP and hates Dell.

I'll only know for sure if i've made the right choice if I reply to this in two years on the same machine!

I can't really see how one make can be better than the other in terms of components. They all use the same CPUs/graphics, HDDs are from the same group of companies, as are motherboards etc. Only bit I can see varying is the bits we can see - screen, mouse etc.

And unless the manufactures all get another load of dodgy resistors or whatever, I'd imagine it's just luck of the draw. Could be wrong though!

I am not basing it on isolated incidents though. I am talking 50+ Acers failed vs 2-3 Dell failures over the last 5years and the Dells we have outnumber the Acers probably 10-1 so average that out if the numbers were equal and you have 500 faulty Acers to every 2-3 faulty Dells.

I am not that keen on HP or Lenovo due to the failure rates of these but i think that is only because Dell rate so highly in the reliability compared to the other 2. But the failure rate of these is nothing compared to Acer.

A lot of laptop reliability is down to how they are treated too! If they are treated well there is a high chance of them lasting. Blocking vents whilst on your lap isnt going to do it many favours. I always put mine down on a table etc. My sister treats her laptop badly, balanced on her knee etc and it hasn't been great! :giggle:

Had my Acer for 4 years and i'm only replacing it because it can't run the things i want it to run. Other than that it's been faultless, all the HP's I've come across have been a complete pain in the arse with both reliability and support (drivers ect) Dell make very nice laptops, we've got a few 4+ year old ones that still run nicely. We supply Dell at work and we don't have many back at all (although it's mainly servers and the like so only basing this on a few hundred laptops compared to a few thousand servers!)

Have a browse round on the link above (saveonlaptops.co.uk). I just bought myself a laptop from them and so has my sister and they were really good prices! My sister saved over £100 on the cheapest price she could find anywhere and I saved £130 on mine.

Celerons suck, Avoid.

Basically any of the otehr mainline processors are fine.

AMD kit is good, maybe not quite as good as Intel but if the price is cheaper...

If it's going to run Win7 make sure it's got at least 2Gb of RAM with room for more.

I've found HP and Toshiba to be good. Nothing too bad with Dells really. They do tend to supply them filled with crap which you have to clear out.

Don't worry about free AV etc bundled in, you can get all the for free anyway so stick the bottom line.

Ebuyer is good for deals.
