Octavia 1.6 CR

Featured Replies

Hi

At around 1.5k miles i noticed an engine knocking noise when accellerating on 1st and 2nd gear. no noise whatsoever on the other gears. took it to the dealer for a check and they said that there is nothing wrong with the car. They assured me that this was normal for a diesel. Done 3k miles now and the noise is getting on my nerves.

Has anybody gone through the same experience? Is this normal? Otherwise the car is great. Very smooth and punchy for a 1.6lt although economy is nowhere near advertised data. getting 43mpg on short urban trips.

Thanks

Make sure oil is topped up, check on the level of course. Even the CR diesel clatters a bit. Turn the radio up or buy a petrol, even they clatter a bit mind you.

Fuel consumption will improve 10 to 20% over then next 30K or 50K miles. What is the max speed on Malta?

my 2.0CR doesn't rattle at all. Sounds like a petrol....in fact it confused my petrol head mate at first because he thought i'd gone mad and bought a petrol and didn't believe it was a diesel until he saw the rev counter! (he has a Honda S2000 but used to have a Leon Cupra PD!)

Engine should not knock . Ask to hear the same knock on another car. They are trying to fob you off . My Golf CR 1.6TDI is very smooth and quiet so much so that sometimes I forget the engine is running. Certainly no knocks on accelerating or decelerating. My MPG is big disappointment but am hoping it will improve with milage. Even a 1.9 PD diesel does not knock as you describe. Take friend with you to dealer. It's a lot more difficult to soft soap two guys when they stick to their guns. If it were my car I would start making noises that you want to reject the car. This should make them have a rethink.

I should point out that a CR engined car with standard Eropean DPF is not really suitable for driving on a small island . I'm surprised that VW market DPF Diesels on Malta Does your car have DPF ?. Maybe Maltese Diesels do not have DFPs.

I seem to remember someone saying that the FL versions have less sound insulation which may account for some of the noise. The engines in the bigger petrol FLs now use chains to drive the cams rather than belts and this does make a bit of a different noise, not awful but a little more clattery.

Is diesel fuel much cheaper than petrol in Malta as I would not go for diesel in an urban, semi urban area if the 2 fuels were about the same price with diesels being more expensive to buy and the consumptions not being as huge a difference as they were a decade or so ago ie more like 20% rather than 40% that it was then.

I fully agree on this one: the CR 1.6TDI works like clockwork. I really like the engine. I never had that knocking sound you described though. I once heard a story from a mechanic

with the car that had the same issue, and apparently they left a screwdriver somewhere in the engine. This doesn't mean yours has the same problem, but i would make

sure you have it properly checked.

Oil was OK. max speed 50mph but only on short stretches not more than 2 miles

Car does not have DPF and i do not know of any make that market it here. The service manager did try another car, although not in my presence, and he said that it made the same noise. It's the worst between 1500 and 2000 rpm.

The sound is very similar to petrol pincing.

it is not a problem of insulation as the car is very smooth when idle or on 3rd, 4th and 5th gear. diesel is about 8% cheaper which is not much but the difference in advertised consumption between petrol and diesel was high. feel grossly misled here.

thanks for this. will go back to the dealer and this time i will be more assertive. just one more question, could it be low diesel quality?

I once owned a BMW 320 diesel which I had from new. It never liked Esso diesel and would produce a sound similar to a petrol engine pinking. It was fine on all other brands. So maybe you should try alternative fuel and see if you still get the noise.

Fuel stations here sell only 1 kind of diesel but i did try a different station then the usual one and, don't ask me why, the knocking noise has nearly disappeared. I only hear it rarely and can live with it. So thanks for the advice. Thanks to this I now know that the service manager is an idiot not to suggest that it could be a diesel problem.

Here's the rest of this story.

Kept insisting that the noise was not normal and was told to take to car for further computer tests. Was told that the car was in perfect order. Not happy I sought independent advice from a specialist garage and was told that the car had a faulty injector. Confronted the garage manager but got nowhere so I wrote to the general manager requesting manufacturer's confirmation that the noise was normal. He immediately offered a 2 year warranty extension and asked me to take the car back to the garage. This time both the mechanic and the garage manager admitted that the noise was not normal. The GM immediately ordered the replacement of the 4 injectors.and gave me an extra free annual service for my troubles. Now, the noise is gone and I have noticed a marked increase in power and consumption has gone up to 50mpg. Moral of the story is never give up and if one door is closed, knock on another.

well done!

Excellent news, well done, and sound advice to us all.

I can go with this ^^

I recently had a cr 1.6 elegance out from the dealer for a few days and I could hardly believe my ears at how rattly it was compared to my 2.0cr
