Need Help With Wireless Printer Server

Featured Replies

Just bought a Belkin wireless printer server.Software installed and if i run the Belkin utility I can see the printer is connected and ready. If I unplug the USB cable at the back of the server and plug it into the other port,it's detected as printer 2.However when Itry to print anything the Canon utility (Smartbase MP390 printer) kicks up and tells me the printer is off line.If i put the USB back into the computer all is well. The server is being routed via a netgear wireless router/modem.Belkin does'nt mention this printer as compatible but it does'nt say it is'nt either.Any suggestions for a computer muppet!!!!

Not too familiar with intricacies of the Canon gear, but I suspect the utility is looking for the printer on the USB port on the computer.

If you go to the control panel, choose "printers" and "add printer", then choose to add a network printer, and if you browse through the options it should detect the printer on the printer server...

I'll go with Robs idea.

I had a similar thing when I set up my router, made my printer which is attached to my main PC available to my laptop on the network. I had to go through the add printer bit.

I haven't used that particular kit either, but if the connection between your computer and the print server is good, then imagine it as a 'wired' print server and treat it as such.

The print server (like your PC) should have an IP address, it will also have a 'port' for each USB connection.

As the printer was not designed around being on a network, you will probably find nothing in the printer manual or driver setup on how to configure this.

What you usually have to do is check the printer properties, then under the ports tab make sure its using a TCP/IP port, which should reflect the IP address and port that your printer is connected to on the print server. This might look something like...

192.168.0.10:USB1

If no TCP/IP ports are setup on your PC for the print server you might have to add one manually. There should be information with the Belkin print server on how to do this. If not go to the printers folder, make sure no printers are selected, go to file, server properties, then ports where you can add a new TCP/IP port - try choosing all the defaults first.

Hope this helps  , if you've already tried all this stuff, then sorry - I've no idea

Cheers

Cheers, will give it a go later and post the outcome!

You have installed both print server and wireless thingy correctly?. Have you also told the printer where to print to ie which port its on?

Pretty sure i've installed them properly, but which port is a wireless printer server on? I thought the wi fi block speaks to the printer server.I did have the wi fi working for shared internet with no security, but i've lost that now!! That P.C. shaped window is looking more appealing by the minute!!!

Go through control panel/ printers and other hardware/printer and faxes, double click on your printer abd then you will see the ports tab. Open that tab and uncheck its default setting and check the print server. Should work then.
