insurance madness

Featured Replies

now that my PD100 is out of warranty i was contemplating getting a remap as its a cheap upgrade for what it gives.......

so i started looking for insurance......

i currently pay about £400 fully comp with the wife as a named driver, 10 years NCD, now i expect a rise in the premium but £2K!!! :o

that was from Performance Direct who alledgedly specialise in modified cars, beat that quote came back around £1800

so can anyone recomend an insurer thats not insane?

at these prices i suspect that there would be a lot of undeclared remaps but thats not something i would be prepared to do. unless there are some more sensible insurers out there then i guess the car will be staying standard :'(

I guess modifying your car seriously reduces the number of insurance companies you can go to and so severely reduces competition (at least I assume when most insurers ask if yout car is standard and unmodified, most will say sorry we can't insure you). Probably better to change the car for something fast enough for your liking. Price of insurance is not an excuse to not declare a remap - you'll find that out after you have an accident and they find the remap if they look for it.

£400 for your circumstances seems a bit steep in itself (unless you live in certain areas of Bradford or something). Have a look here http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/compare-cheap-car-insurance

yeah the £400 is just laziness, i didnt bother on the last renewal so got stung for beinga "loyal customer"

i agree completely that its not worth not declaring which is why a remap is out - i cant justify 5x the insurance for a bit more fun but given the popularity of a remap on VAG diesels and the simple cheap benefits i suspect my attitude to this is not the norm.

as for swapping the car, i have a great reliable motor the only thing i would change was the engine but they didnt put the PD130 into the estate. thats still not changed so a new car still wouldnt give me the car i want - but a £300 remap would...... hence why i looked into it

the big companies from what i have found have a 20% power increace as the limit - well with 30%+ on a VAG diesel with a remap thats out.

i will have a look for more specialist insurers but it seems crazy to have a premium thats almost the value of the car.

will all of the modified motors on here i am hoping that there will be some suggestions for more sensible insurance companies but would not be surprised if these quotes were the norm.

is it any wonder that there are so many uninsured drivers when the penalties are insignificant compared to the premiums :(

Try sky there sponsors on here. Really good 800 with my shark map included and I've only got 1 ncb

will do, sounds like they are at least on the same planet :giggle:

Another vote for Sky - did my remapped VRS SE for £475 with an introductory discount of 3 years as I took my full NCD to another car.

Very helpful too

Are performance Direct a broker or do they underwrite themselves? My only thought would be that the policy you're on isn't favourable towards modified cars, despite other underwriters they may use being friendlier.

Just re-insured with Adrian Flux, with all mods declared. £41 over best quote as standard

brentacre are usually cheaper then sky, flux etc

well Sky have just quoted £550 which is much more like it!

will give brentacre a try.

not sure about performance direct - would guess a broker. they were just the first on the search for modified car insurance and claimed to specialise

Adrian Flux - not even had a quote - called and got the most disinterested receptioninst who passed me through to be cut off after a couple of minutes ringing - with service that good...... :o

not tried Chris Knott as i have 2 convictions so that rulles them out

thanks for all of the sugestions
