Thoughts On This Possible Purchase

Featured Replies

Hi Folks

Girlfriend has just sold her Mini, woo hoo.

Turns out she has rather taken a shine to driving my car, and would like one herself.

I've found one not far from here, its a:

03 plate

1.9 TDi Ambiente

Hatchback

108k

Timing belt done at 80k

Clutch and flywheel recently changed to single mass

Full service history

£2000

Don't want to rush you, but she's interested, and we're hopefully viewing tonight

Thanks

Tom

90 or the 110? Pulls nicely - guess you have your 110 to compare against.

Maybe sticky turbo issues. If been out in the rain, check for damp carpets (front and rear) as that is an indication of leaks near to pollen filter, or door seals/membranes.

all electric windows/mirrors work, alarm LED flashes in the door when locked.

I can't comment on price, as I have no idea!!

Is there an obvious way of telling whether its the 90 or 110 BHP version?

Tom

engine code on service book sticker is ASV for the 110 might be good to check its the same on the engine block cant remember exactly where it is though... also will be on the v5 in the engine number and I think in the vin number

I would guess its the 90 bhp at that price

on the 90, tdi badge will be all black letters.

The 110 had "TD" in black with a red "i".

oh yeah... forgot about that :giggle:

would still check the engine codes though I once had a car with a different block...

I think the 90 only had drums on the back too, but not 100% sure on that. Best bet is the engine code, and the colouring of the TDi on the engine cover and the tailgate.

The owner should know....

Worth checking what the trip comp says in terms of average MPG - you might see if it has had a thrashing recently.... :wonder:

Hmm, didn't know about the TDi colouring, worth remembering.

The trip computers a good call too.

If you know the number plate, then some online parts companies will tell you the engine details. AskMID might know too (but you are meant to own the car you are checking....)

tell me the reg number and i'll tell ya if it's 90 or 110

110 has disks on the rear and 90 has drums.. badges can easily be swapped so not always conclusive. at that money its cheap enough too as long as its straight

On an 03 plate, it can only be a 90BHP TDI in the Ambiente as they didn't put the 110 in, only Elegance and L&K. The Ambiente SE didn't come out until 2004, so it can't be a 130 (as far as I know).

OK, we got it for £1900.

It's a 90 BHP engine.

Body work and inside in good condition, in fact to be honest very good condition.

Took it for a spin, pulls well, brakes good, turbo working fine (had to open the window to hear it, not quite as prominent as mine).

Everything I've checked so far is working fine. Only thing that surprised me is there appears to be no front fogs? It has the shaping in the reflector, but rather than being the big lens there is a similar shaped silver blanking plate. Were they optional?

The slightly smaller engine explains why the insurance was lower than I expected. Either way it's down 6 groups from the poxy mini.

WWell done, sounds like a result to me
