If Carlsberg made engines ?

Edited by roman.w

Thanks to all who replied - you may be interested to know that Skoda have donated the oil pump for free and I have only to pay for the labour cost which is about £630. In the circumstances that is a good result. Obviously I have escaped without having to replace the turbo which, bearing in mind I couldn't stop immediately for safety reasons is remarkable. I am indebted to DM Keith in York for great service and if anyone in the area is thinking of buying Skoda I can recommend them. However, I am left wondering what next? I have lost faith in the car and don't feel inclined to buy another. Like many of you I have a sour taste in my mouth. This car has cost me £2200 in bills since Christmas of which about 1/3 is reasonable wear and tear or sheduled maintenance. 2 bad cars in a row doesn't feel like bad luck to me.

Regards to all

Bryan

£630 labour to fit a oil pump.....how much of a job is it to fit a oil pump in this engine?

At last! Someone to give me a little confidence in my car. Most people join these forums to get the answer to a problem they already have which is why they are full of talk about things breaking and being unreliable. I wonder just what percentage of these engines fail with this problem. 2%? 5%? Or maybe only 0.1%? I am sure that there are 100s of Mk 1 Superbs with these engines which have done high mileages without the oil pump packing in. Go on any forum for any make of car and you will find similar horror stories of shoddy design, apathetic dealers and manufacturers, warnings of never to buy a Thingummy Whotsit Mark X with the bilateral doodah engine coz it's a pile of **** despite the fact that there are zillions of Thingummy Whotsit Mark Xs with the bilateral doodah engine all going strong. I love my Superb and really don't want to part with it because a few or even several unfortunates have had a bad experience.....no disrespect intended. Fingers crossed I haven't tempted fate by posting this.

Nope, he mean's 14562.8 miles  only goes to the shop and back :D

Seriously though I'd be interested to know what service schedule it has been on, i.e LL or fixed.

mikey vrs to replace the oil pump is a bit of a job...my mechanic wanted 400 quid to do the job, which i supose equates to about 10hrs to do. Now if your local skoda dealer is going to do the job for 630 quid that probably doesnt include the vat plus they would want to renew the cambelt abd probably the water pump as a matter of course and also the liquid gold oil at around another 60 odd quid including the filter, then the price starts mounting up...and as i found out, it wasnt till the work was done, that further engine damage was apparent, as there was regular heavy knocking down below, so it was agreed to stop further work and get the car recovered back to my mother in laws place.

So unless you can guarantee the engine is damage free from oil starvation, then best of luck, otherwise the expense paid on the oil pump will be a waste of time. My wife was fortunate to have a mother who said get the engine repaced complete which is what we did, and the car then became an asset and only a week previously it was a liability, and to top it off, an mot was put on the car and we very quickly shifted it on.

Having driven the car with a new engine fitted, it was so so so different from the greenline that we drive now..felt a lot heavier and the power delivery was very impressive, but it had to go, as we werent prepared to drive around worrying about when it will fail again. Ufrtunately that will be for someone else to find out if the car ever gets sold.
