VRS odd 5th gear selection

Featured Replies

Hi,

Has anyone had problems with selecting 5th on their VRS. Normally mines fine, but every now and then (changing up or down) i go for 5th and its as if it doesnt exist. Change back to 4th or go to 6th then go back to 5th and no prob.

I'd like to think im ok at gear changing and give the syncromesh time enough to spin up the correct gear. Im not completly sure there is a prob, so i thought i'd see if you guys had come accross it.

No, seems OK on mine. 1st to 2nd is a bit snatchy though, which I believe is common in VAG gearboxes (my MK4 Golf was the same), gets better once its warmed up.

mines fine

Thanks guys

I was pretty sure that someone else would of picked up on it, but alas it must be a prob with mine.

It's a bit weird though, something in the cabling must be snagging

I believe the re-adjustment of the gear linkage for across-gate and fore-and-aft movement of the lever is a simple task (say 5 minutes fiddling in the engine compartment) so your dealer should be able to do it while you wait.

All the gears are fine for me... I'd certainly take it back to the dealers.

I find when mine is cold that it can almost grind 1-2 and 2-3 . . . anyone had this? Once warmed up no problem . . .

It shouldn't do that. These are modern cars, not cars of the 70s and 80s. You should get it checked.

hmmmm, really should phone that garage and book it in for a check up. .

smokey

gearknob vibration

Gear lever notchy grindy 1-2 and 2-3

rear brake grind noise (tried driving with hand brake on a bit last night, noise went for a bit but was back this morning)

will call the dealer later once I have checked out some of these things on the forum, I feel exccesive use of the search comming up!

Worth getting it checked - most of those things can be sorted by the dealer and why not do it straight away :D

I'm thinking if it's smokey and not supposed to be it may be burning up more fuel as well than required :(

Its sounds just like my 5th gear...it occasionally baulks when I try to select it moving up from 4th to 5th. I always ensure the clutch is fully disengaged before changing gear, i.e, pedal fully to the floor, so I wouldnt have thought the gear baulking mechanism should block me out from 5th. It doesnt happen very often ...perhaps a couple of times a week so I'm not too concerned.

My 5th gear sometimes refuses to go in - especially at speed. Told the stealer but they found nothing.

It seems to be easing now and doesn't happen as much.

Me too, sometimes 4->5 or 6>5 gearchange seems "slow". It doesn't baulk, clunk or hit resistance as such it just seems oddly stiffer sometimes. Say 1 in 10 or 1 in 20 changes, maybe more often if hoofing it a bit.

Mine's a characteristic at the moment, rather than a problem...

J.
