ERG valve

Featured Replies

Hi,

The 'engine management' light (if that's what it is actually called - it's yellowy/orange?) came on the other day in my '07 Fabia vRS SE, and the owners manual suggested (...insisted!) that I took the car to a dealer for a diagnostic. Redland Auto Centre, Bristol, advised me that the exhaust gas recirculation (ERG) value was shot, and needed replacing - apparently the diaphragm wears out when they get clogged up. They offered to carry out the replacement for £198 inc. labour and VAT.

The car has done 63k miles, and I swapped the factory-fit EGR gasket for a 9mm one in 2007 after about 12k miles (not sure if that's relevant).

I understand the purpose of the EGR valve it to reduce emissions, so do I actually need to have this work done immediately? The MOT is due in May, so if it fails on emissions then can I just have it replaced then? Are there any implications if I don't replace the EGR valve immediately?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

James

It won't fail mot on that as they only check smoke output for diesel emissons

You can unplug it, will do your engine more good than bad, hence why so many of use replace them with a blank "race pipe". At current diesels are not tested foe emissions so you have no MOT worries.

sorry to gig in...

is the same true for petrol engines - in partic the 1.4 mpi?

My enging management lights come one - sporadically.

And if so, whats a 'race pipe'??

Petrols are tested on emissions, so come MOT time could be an issue. That said, the MOT regs coming in are said to be failing cars with removed emissions parts (cats, DPF etc), so EGR delete maybe an issue.

Does the 1.4 8v even have an EGR? I know the 16v does, but not sure on the 8v as it started off back in the Favoirt etc. . .
