Strange noise

Featured Replies

Strange noise, sounds like metal scraping across a slate roof, lasts a couple of seconds, intermittent, noticed when even making small changes in steering. definitely not from something loose in boot, thats been emptied, but definitely coming from the rear of vehicle. Had a strange problem with the car last week, already posted on this forum, which most likely was to do with a fuel supply problem not letting me start the engine. Just wondering, before having the brakes/wheels inspected, by any chance, is there any component in the fuel tank which might come loose and cause this strange noise and could have been related to my previous problem?

rear suspension maybe? or exhaust but I doubt that would only make a noise when making the slightest of turns, especially if the sound lasts for a couple of seconds.

Does the noise happen if you are braking and turning at the same time?

What was your previous problem?

will be taking the car out for a run shortly and try to narrow down when this noise appears. my grandson says it sounds like one of his toy cars rolling across the boot - it cant be the boot is empty.

Last week I queried on this forum if I had a starter problem when the engine wouldn't start, thee AA man suggesting it was starter/flywheel related - wrong diagnosis. Anyway the engine eventually spluttered into life then ran normally and has been ever since, only now - by co-incidence- this strange noise has started coming from the rear.

Something in the tyre-well maybe?

Oh yes, I remember your previous problem - the "sounding faster" starter motor when the car failed to started. Infact I was surprised the AA man managed to peak inside the cambelt area, as mine is clipped down across the top and the sides!

I have that noise too sounds like the brake pads slightly binding :wonder:

I had a terrible noise coming from the rear of my car tonight. The kids don't half create havoc sometimes.

Gaffer tape is the cure to that problem. :smirk:

It might be a shield loose on the back of the brake disc. Unless you have drums on the back?

90tdi will be drums on the back by standard unless it has had a brake upgrade.
