VRS Gemlins

Featured Replies

Morning All.

I've had my VRS for a few months now and on the whole I'm really very happy with it. I've got a few gremlins that appear to be cropping up.

Up first is the power steering:

The warning lamp will come up every once in a while when starting for the first time in the morning. an off and on again rectifies this. It did however come on the other day while driving and the power steering was intermittent. On parking it was as if there was 1/4 turn assisted then 1/4 not then the next 1/4 assisted. So on an so forth. Once again an on and off sorted it.

Fuel gauge:

This has only happened once but whilst driving all of a sudden the gauge dropped to zero. Restart and we're back to 3/4 of a tank.

Temp gauge.

Whilst the car is warming up, the temp gauge will rise to a little below normal, then drop (as if the thermostat has been opened), this morning it dropped right back down to zero and about 30 seconds later right back up to normal. Strange.

CEL Lamp:

I know I need to get this one plugged in, I'm waiting for my laptop to come back to life but again it's intermittent. Stay on for a day and a half and then go off. Happened 4 or 5 times now. I have recently had a Unit 18 map done and they did the EGR delete to the ECU at the same time. As yes I haven;t got around to actually removing the EGR. Is this likely to cause a problem?

It kinda feels like I'm driving around in a car running Windows 95 given how often switching it on and off again fixes the problem.

Any advice and suggestions are very gratefully received.

Cheers.

Flip.

The power steering will most likely be the battery, and the temperature gauge dropping will probably be the coolant temp sender.

Try a new batt

Will prob fix all the issues :)

Yeah, you`d be surprised how many problems a crappy battery causes. Good chance it`ll help with most of them. Temp gauge COULD be the sensor, which isnt much money to sort, but i`d try a battery first and see.

Matt

If the battery is not up to the job, you get +B voltage rail errors and the entire system goes haywire, as everything runs off the voltage control unit. If the 12V rail drops low, even for a second or two, the 5V rail that feeds all the sensors goes low, and you get erroneous faults. Also check the heavy duty link fuses on top of the battery box. Check for hairline cracks on each of these link fuses.

Thanks for the info guys. Is there a simple way of testing what my battery is putting out in terms of volts?

You can put a volt meter across the battery terminals with the engine off and you should see approx 12.4 volts, with the engine started you should get approx 14.4 volts.

But thats not a complete test, what you really need is a high rate discharge tester which tests how many amps the battery can deliver and for how long.

A few weeks back I changed the battery on the wifes 2006 fabia vrs due to battery power delivery problems, which ammongst other things was causing PAS issues.

The original battery was (IMO) too small for the job, rated @ (330A DIN), 540A EN, 61Ah, so I replaced it with the highest output battery I could get and would fit into the original battery tray and holder.

Its now got a Bosch S5 (silver) battery fitted which is rated @ 780A EN, 77Ah and has a five year guarantee, (278L x 175W x 190H (mm)).

So far all battery power issues have been resolved.

I just replaced the original battery on a 2004 vRS - the original I removed was 79Ah battery - 61Ah does sound small for a TDi...
