Windscreeg fogging up - AC faulty?

Featured Replies

Hi.

Recently our windscreen will fog up almost the instant the engine is started - a total white out making the car undrivable for quite a while. It seems to take an age to clear. Do you think the AC could be faulty or in need or a regas? Its a 2005 octavia elegance with the automatic AC system

Thanks.

Wouldnt do any harm gettin it checked and regassed, also when was the last time your pollen filter was changed?

What temperature is it outside? If I have had the aircon on during the day, and start the car the following morning (under 4 degrees ish), the aircon compressor doesn't run and the car steams up with all the excess moisture on the condensor matrix.

Also make sure the AC drains are clear. Not sure how to do it on the MK2 though.

Check the pollen filter under the glove box. Sometimes it's this being damp that can make it worse than normal.

On my Superb, this only happens if the recirculate is in either manual or auto modde. If I ignore this setting, screen never fogs up that bad.

I had this exact problem this morning. Approached car and glass all clear. Started engine. Breathed a few times. Windows completely fogged. :( Had to wait about 6mins for the glass to clear enough to drive. Wasn't completely clear and wasn't too happy driving like that but I really had to go.

No leaks that I'm aware of. New pollen filter 6 months ago. No tailgate washer probs.

Actually come to think of it I had a my son's and my raincoats in the car yesterday after getting totally drenched so that had something to do with it I'm sure. But it does seem in general to be foggier/steamier of late. Putting it down to wetter/colder weather.

.... and today it was fine.... :wonder:

Thanks. I should have used search first - sorry. Looks like this is fairly common. I'll have a look at the pollen filer in the light at the weekend. Not sure if it's ever been changed as I only had the car from 60k miles on. Same for the air con.

It blows cold ok si I think it still works fine. One thing I have noticed is more 'outside' noise from the back door, almost as if the window is not closed properly. Could it be a duff seal letting cold damp air in overnight?

It is residual water in the AC system - it doesn't drain very well.

Either avoid using your AC unless necessary or turn it off 10 mins before you stop to avoid it.

I have a similar problem but setting the heater to blow towards the foot well instead of windscreen helps with you first start up the car

On my Superb, this only happens if the recirculate is in either manual or auto modde. If I ignore this setting, screen never fogs up that bad.

I found that too. Turn it off and no where near as bad.

FOr me it's worse when we get a weather change this time of year, especially wet and mild to cold and dry.
