After five years and 47k miles, it's time to get new discs and pads. My local (ish) dealership has given me a price of £265 for discs and pads all round (fitting not included). GSF have said that their OEM spec set would be £206 all in.

I've read quite a few threads on what people like, but some of them are quite old now and I was wondering how the GSF discs last compared to OEM? I'm aware that driving styles differ and that I've done well to get the mileage I have. I am wanting to know how the GSF compare in your context with your driving style and usage. Are the dealership ones worth the extra £60, or would the GSF be fine. The lady on the phone hinted that they would probably be Brembo discs and was unable to say who made the pads.

I don't mind the extra if it's worth it, as they should give me another five years. If the GSF discs are £60 cheaper but only last three years, it's a false economy.

he'll sell you the same as your dealer for much, much less - probably a lot less than the oem parts at gsf

then just get local garage to fit and bleed system

I'm in the exact same situation - which did you decide to go for?

My local Skoda dealer has quoted me £301 for new disks and pads all round and thats after a 20% discount. Was it a main dealer who quoted you £265?

Ive just fitted new front discs and pads to mine, both bosch items from andrew pages and they cost me 120 quid at trade and i fitted them myself

My father said he has been quoted 135 for a full set of disks and pads from a trade place. Not sure how they will compare to proper skoda ones though?

Dont bother with grooved and drilled discs, do nothing, look crap and a waste of money

If you get pads and discs from euro or GSF go for the pagid stuff they are as good, if not better then OEM and yourll find a lot of big car companys use the as OEM anyway, for example Porsche, and some BMW and so on

I have been looking into all this as well and I have a friend who can get me all round brakes and pads oem for £130? at trade when they generally cost £216 odd but then again the browns group option didn't look to bad.

just buy some grooved one with mintex pads and fit them yourself much easier & cheaper

Nope nothing wrong there.

I used them on mine to cure the mooing / groaning from the rears.

one thing tho, they make a slight droning noise under mid to ha#rd braking and they eat the pad slightly faster but on the plus they do clean them up. I liked them and they lasted a while

you will prob find that the dimples n grooves in them are not that deep ne way.

It's nearly 2 months down the line and I'm still on the originals. I took them to another mechanic who took one look and said they're fine. We cleaned them up, and all seems well. There's about 8mm of pad left on the fronts and the disc has loads of life left. After the corrosion and small lip on the edge was sorted, they look okay for now.

As for the dealer, it was Chapman's of Pickering who gave me the quote. They must be needing the business in these quiet times as the discount was quite hefty. They are a Subaru & Fiat delaership as well as the Skoda side of things. There's usually a nice STI in the showroom where the parts desk is. B)

I'm saving up now as since the original post, other bills have come in and eaten into the car fund. Knowing me & my driving style, I'll still be on these same discs & pads in another six months. :D

I've got the Brembo (High Carbon) front discs from GSF and they are brilliant. Had them on for a few years now and they have been faultless. I particularily like the anti-corrosive coating on the centre and outer edges of the disc, to keep them looking clean. They are probably the best quality standard design discs out there.

My rears are the Zimmermann discs from GSF. Again being a German OEM the discs are good quality, but lack the anti-corrosive coating of the Brembo's. Brembo don't make rear discs of our size, so these were the next best standard option. I see Zimmermann are now offering this coating too though, so might be available for our size. I've had them for almost 3.5yrs and they still have plenty of meat. But I'd like to replace them soon, mainly due to the ugly corrosion (one is also more worn than the other due to a calliper sticking on for a while). If I can't buy them with the coating, I'll probably get them coated myself.

When I asked what make the rear discs were that Skoda sold I was informed by them that they are Trupart discs. Personally I felt that GSF's offerings were better quality and lower cost.

I've had standard Mintex, Textar and Pagid pads from GSF and Brakes International. All of which come from the same German manufacturer (TMD), and actually have the same numbers on the pads! I still have one pair of the discontinued Mintex Xtreme's, which were slightly better than standard. Personally I prefer the Pagid pads, because they come in a nice blue box!! The Textar's are however identical......

I know what you mean about the pads.

I only changed my discs due to the moaning thing the rears do and the grooved ones seemed to stop that. I used my std pads for over 3 years but had to change them due to one coming off the backing, but the pads were pritty thick still. Funny tho as the BD predator pads did the same thing. Might be the way I use them as I dont really use them on the normal day to day as I plan ahead more but do like the od fun bit lol.

I found the std pads to be rock hard, seemed to eat the discs more than the pads.
