Another Oily Question

Featured Replies

According to the service book, my Fabia (with the bog standard 1.4 MPI engine) has fixed service intervals, denoted by 'QG0' on the label.

The manual tells me this means it needs oil that matches one of VW 500 00, VW 502 00 or VW 501 01. Presumably the 'VW' stands for Volkswagen.

Is anyone here able to translate this to brands of oil that I'm likely to find on the shelves, or can anyone suggest a web link?

I'm looking for a top-up of the original rather than a complete change, if that makes a difference.

Something leads me to suspect that Tesco's (or Wilko's) own brand isn't quite good enough.

Thanks

Most decent oils will state on the back what standards they meet. But you sure do want to avoid those Supermarket cooking oils.

Atrip to a decent motoring shop or Halfords would be a good thing.

Vheers

The service invoices from my local dealer itemised Castrol Magnatec for the oil changes.

I have no way of knowing whether or not that's what they actually used, but you can be fairly certain that it meets the VW spec, and it's readily available.

I used to get my previous cars (Citroens) serviced at an independent Citroen/Peugeot specialist, and they were great advocates of Morris oils. I suspect that they are only available to the trade, though - not retail.

Perssonally I think Millers oils to be an excellent choice for your motor, especially as there fuel type specific

Cheers

My dealer supplied me with oil as it was cheaper than Halfords anyway and I knew I was getting an exact match for what was in the car already. He used Esso Ultron oils.

But Tesco's own brand is suitable for all petrol engines. It says so on the bottle. Surely those nice Tesco people wouldn't lie to me! :D

Seriously, I paid a quick visit to Halfords and bought some Castrol Magnatec 10W-40. I noticed that there are two grades of Magnatec but the label on the one I bought states: 'Especially suitable when your handbook states Volkswagen 505 00, VW 500 00, MB 229.1'. I seem to remember the Mobil 1 met the spec too.

Interestingly (rather boringly actually) Halfords have a booklet in front of the oils which lists various cars and the correct grade of oil to use. It doesn't specify any particular brand.

I'm a bit surprised that there doesn't seem to be a convenient web page listing all the oils that meet the various specs. I did do quite a bit of web searching before my original post.

Thanks, as ever, for all the replies.

Well, not so long ago I was in the same question and I find this web that tell you waht oils met those specs

http://www.volkswagen.com.br/default.asp?turl=%2Ffaq%2FDefault%2Easp%3F

Scroll down until you see the numbers VW 500 00, VW 502 00 or VW 501 01.

There are a lots of oil that meets this specs just as an example I give you some webs here........... maybe you can get better brands near your place.

Beware! That is not the same as saying that the oil actually meets those specifications. If it does meet those specifications, it should specifically say so on the container.

I see what you mean. Clever bit of wording that!

Isaac's link (thanks for that - couldn't find anything similar on UK or global VW sites) seems to suggest that the Magnatec is OK although what's sold in one country may not be the same as in another.

Morris's lubricants, I remember them from aircooled VW days when "straight" 30's grade was needed. Well they (Morris's) are still around, still available to retail customers and have a synthetic that meets VW 502.00
