Gear selector cables - adjustable?

Featured Replies

Had the clutch changed recently and since it's come back she is often reluctant to engage third, sometimes it doesn't feel like it goes into first fully also.

Just wondering, before i go mad at the guy who did the work, can you adjust the selector cables? I've not looked under the bonnet yet, hoping somebody on here my know from experience.

Cheers

Yes, there is an auto adjusting proceeder.

1: Lock cable end springs at gearbox end by pushing and rotating the collars on each cable.

2: Set selector assembly on gearbox to neutral and lock in that position using special pin on side of gearbox

3: Remove gearstick gator, and lock gearstick in correct position by inserting special tool through gearstick plate hole, and the hole in the floor below.

4: Release collars on cable ends to normal position. (Undo step 1)

5: Remove gearstick special tool, and return pin on gearbox to normal position

It's a lot easier if you have access to a Haynes Manual or Skoda W/Shop Manual

Also check cables are properly seated in their brackets on the bulkhead.

Isn't it different on the 5 speed box?? Its a DIY job on a 6 speed, (as described above) but from my experience you need some kind of dealer tool for the 5 speed gearbox for setting the cables correctly (assuming the OP has the 5 speed as says SDI on their profile).

Theres a good video on youtube which I used when I done mines. Same as above but with videos, I think.

Excellent video, shows just how easy the job is once you know how.

Nope exactly the same except early 6 speed has a locking pin rather than a lever.

Yup, the technique listed here helped me pick up a Fabia 1.4mpi for 600 quid a year ago... The previous owner was selling it because they thought that the gearbox was shot after having a clutch change (at Mr Clutch no less!) and it couldn't engage reverse.

...I paid for it, drove it down the street... Opened the haynes manual and 10 mins later had a working car!

This should be stickied somewhere - it's an essential tip for people having gearbox selection problems.
