A bad shopping trip

 Great legislation there then! But seriously, I thought the DPA covered individuals? Although I guess you could claim it's the individual responsible being protected or something? :S

Peoples registrations are personal details is how they would look at it and although you can easily see them in street its because its being recorded that i think the act will take effect

In all seriousness though, my sisters's husband is the manager of a large tesco store, thier policy is to only give out info/reg numbers to police/authorities

A registration number, combined with a recognisable image of a person is "[identifiable] personal data" as defined under the Data Protection Act. They must give you a copy of the relevant sections of the video tape if presented with a Subject Access Request - failure to do so may result in civil liability under s22 (IIRC) for damages.

However, one would imagine the best approach would be to inform the police, get a crime number, and inform the Tesco of the incident and that the police are treating it as a crime (I'm not sure if erasing the tape could constitute destruction of evidence).

Hi,

Im sorry to say that Tesco car parks are private property and you park at your own risk. They will not show you the cctv unless you have appeared on camera and you have to request that via the data protection act and they can charge a fee of £10 by law. I know this as im a cctv operator and security officer for the M.O.D. and our car parks are also own risk parking. The person that did that to your car is a low life and I hope you do get the chance to face him.

hope you get it sorted ok , i hate parking in car parks

I dont know what law it is, but this would be covered i think. At work i couldnt even watch the cctv of my own accident dute to some pathetic law.

As said, contact the police and get them to do the leg work, they`ll get further than you with tesco.

Matt

Erm... no... Your car plus a picture of yourself is YOUR personal data. Someone else's car plus a piccie of them is THEIR personal data and would leave the CCTV operator open to prosecution if divulged to an unauthorised 3rd party.

Best option is to notify the carpark operator immediately that the CCTV footage will be required, then report the incident to the Police. (Or the other way around if TESCO etc. demand a crime number). Follow up call with the crime number and/or PC's name might also be beneficial.

When some tw4t took out the off side of my car, the police could not even be bothered

to look at the CCTV footage and wanted all my personal details. Told them to fook off if

that was their attitute and walked out.

Went and bought my first Skoda :)

UPDATE

Went back to tesco's and as i pulled into the car park i looked for CCTV covering the car park but there wasnt any all i could see was the one's covering the cash machines.

I went in to customer services and asked if they had CCTV and explained the situation they confirmed no CCTV covers the car park at all only the cash machines :'( the lady went on to explain her 2 day old car had also been hit a few days ago twice in the same day :o .

Looks like im forking out for this one myself

Seems people "aim" for the new cars?

Bad times. It could have been a whole lot worse though.

I'm surprised that they have no CCTV though. I know in our local tesco they monitor the carpark and if you stay over 3 hours or so, you get a lovely "fine" in the post.

Saddly so yes

Make sure you pay for it yourself and not involve your insurance company (though I think you have to report it as an accident. Not sure legallities of insurance)

I made the error of reporting my hit and run in a car park and foolishly made a claim, I paid the £300 excess, they paid the other £50, then upped my insurance as an at fault accident, by £100 for the following FIVE years

Hope you get a good job done at a good price

or 'HER', lets not be sexist in this modern PC world we live in!!!!!!!!!!

You think that's bad - my best mate just got run over by a female driver :o

He was cycling home and wearing high-vis/lights/reflectors, she took him straight out whilst turning into new shopping precinct and run over the bike and his foot

One smashed foot later and a hefty bill for her to pay!

Unlucky mate, that really sucks.

If I ever have to park next to anyone in a public car park i always take a photo of them next to me, just in case anything happens.

Everyone just seems so dishonest nowadays

This happened to my friend a while back. He drive an nicely modified Honda Accord Type-R. Its immaculate and its his pride & joy. However he was down at Halfords getting some cleaning stuff with one of his friends. Some daft bint in a new BMW 1 series pulled into the space beside his and scored down the paasengers side. My friend was sitting in the car at the time. Jumped out and shouted at her "what the hell are you doing? - dont you know how to drive? - look at how much damage you've done to my car!"(both doors were dented below the bump strips, 1 bump stip knocked off and paint transfer onto her car) - her reply was "Its only a car & any way its park at your own risk!! You cant do anything about it!!" well my friend wasnt putting up with that - she walked off towards PC World - did whatever she was doing. The other guy came out of Halfords with the cleaning stuff. My friend told the other guy to get in the drivers side and he gets into the back on the passengers side. We wait until the Bint from the 1 series is almost at her car and he throws his door open as hard as he can into the quarter panel of the 1 series, putting huge dent in it! her reaction was to be expected "What the **** do you think your doing?" - "oh well its only a car like you said - its park at your own risk - like you said - oh and you cant do anything about it!"

Bit harsh! But fair!

would have been an interesting one to watch ....

Now the appropriate way to deal with it would have been to take pictures, get her reg number, and tell her she's either going to pay for it or her insurance will - wouldn't it? Or to get two burly mates and tip it up onto its side and do it in style.

I think I spotted this woman on Youtube recently

they could always state that its protected with data protection act lol

[FOI is only applicable to public bodies - Police / Councils / BBC etc, so you'll have no joy from Tesco's. As other people have posted, report it to the police as soon as practicable and within 24hrs as a non stop RTC. During store opening hours the car park is a public place as defined in the Road Traffic Act 1988. Good Luck]

that video is fantastic

you can see why women have cheaper car insurance, thankfully not for much longer but they could of put mens insurance down to the same price of womens rather than increasing the womens to same as mens.

Same as Council employeeos in Leeds. They complain women and men are paid unequally, Council's response is to bring down men's wage to that of the women's

would have been an interesting one to watch ....

I almost wet myself with laughter when he told me!
