Need to replace standard air filter with a standard air filter

Featured Replies

Hi Folks

I asked this in another thread, but I don't want to hijack that one, so I'll start my own.

I need to replace the air filter on my 1.9 TDi 02 plate (and possibly a 53 plate too).

I don't want a fancy one, I've not got a modded box, I'm not wanting a CAI, I don't want it to woosh or make any more noise, just a straight simple replacement to the original filter.

Boring I know.

Looking on eBay there seems to be loads...

Example 1

Example 2

And so they go on getting more expensive.

Has anyone any experience/comments on these? Can anyone recommend one?

Just want something cheap and suitable.

Thanks

Tom

Just get a genuine one from a VW/Audi/Skoda main dealer or TPS (Trade Part Specialists). Alternatively get a K&N, Green Cotton, Pipercross, replacement panel filter & you shouldn't ever a need to buy another one again.

OK, so you don't think the cheaper eBay ones are worth it compared with the £14 from a dealer/TPS?

How comes the K&N etc don't need replacing? How much do these come in at?

I've been bitten buying cheap ebay car parts in the past, & landed up having to replace with genuine parts. Landed up costing me more than if I'd bought the real genuine part in the 1st place. If you are hellbent on saving a few quid go to Eurocarparts.

Ive used motor factors ait filters (MANN) usually without any issues on mine.

phone Sere Motors in N Ireland and jst get a full serive kit - David normally can sell me genuine parts delivered to my door for less than pattern spares from the motor factors 20 miles away

Me too on my old oil burner.

Maybe I'm being daft, but I did a quick search for motor factors mann on Google before tea and couldn't see anything that looked like a general parts suppliers.

Anyone got a URL for them?

I phoned TPS, they wanted £14.28, much the same as the dealer. Tried EuroCarParts, they've a Bosch at £11.52 or a Guttmann at £5.88.

MANN is just one of the manufacturer type supplied by ECP/GSF. They just make parts and they get sold on.

And out of interest, why do you have a ready supply of used air filters?

Well it seems I can get somewhere near 5 years worth of normal filters for the cost of a K&N.

I think I read the K&N was a million miles/10 years, with the possible exception of mbanes I think 10 years will be the first for most people, so the normal 5 years worth of standard filters are 50% of the K&N life span, if you religously change it yearly.

I'm not sure how you wash the K&N etc either, if it's oil coated cotton, then I guess you need a solvent? How much is that, and how do you dispose of it after it's been used? How long does the wash take, ie how long without the car?

Nah, I think I'll be a bore and stick with OEM like paper stuff, just need to figure out which, think it might be the Bosch or similar, the Guttmann, seems maybe a little too cheap?

Tom

With the K&N you need to give it a clean every 50,000 or so. You can get a cleaning kit which comes with a solvent for the cleaning and oil to, well, re-oil it.

Damn my secret is out! Actually I just never threw my old ones out.... never know it might be a case when one of those is cleaner than what is in the car! Normally I always pop in a new air filter come MOT time.

I had a petrol once. I just took the plugs out, cleaned them checked the gaps and put them back in. Good old Nova 1.2, it lasted for years like that :giggle: Actually I might have a half knackered spark plug from a 2 stroke strimmer somewhere - handy for testing out electric fence units when there are no children about.... :D

I won't tell you what I found a collection of in my loft space when I was putting in some insulation in my house...... :p

What does that do?? :wonder:

What does that do?? :wonder:

Sparks - better than pee'ing on it to see if it is working

Getting a child to hold both ends of an electric fencer might be seen as child abuse these days :o
