People say they are noisy

Featured Replies

Just a quick question please,

Looking into getting a new shape but 1.9 tdi estate. Some people comment they are noisy. What are they comparing with, are they niosy all th etime or just when pushed hard ?

The garage i take my cars to (not a Skoda dealer) tells me it is the same engine as the Audi and side by side in the garage you cant tell any difference. He thinks if they are noisier it is down to extra sound deadening fitted to the Audi and not the engine.

Are they that much noisier than th enew 1.6 diesel, do not want one of them as i keep my cars for a long time and do not want any DPF to have problems with and have to change them.

I do not want to have to drive it with ear plugs in. trying to get a test drive this weekend sorted.

Regards

They are a lot louder than the CR. If the 1.6 is anything like mine then it sounds just like a petrol. The 1.9 isn't that noisy, just a bit rattly on startup from cold. I quite like the sound of the 1.9 to be honest and had it in a Polo and have still got the Bora with it in and couldn't say that one was more noisy than the other (presume the Polo would have less sound proofing).

Drive both and make your own mind up. You shouldn't have DPF issues with the CR to be honest.

Clattery on tick over and thrashy when under acceleration up to about 2000rpm. After that is smooths out quite nicely and pulls like a train.

TBH the wind noise takes over at 70 ish. Not to mention the tire roar from the OEM Dunlops.

I don't find mine that noisy really, although it does depend what you're used to. I used to own an Astra DTI, now that was noisy!

For me its clattery when cold like most diesels, and is fine when it warms up. There is abit of a roar when you floor it though, but I like that.

Never had a problem with mine but try one out first.

I did 80k in my last 1.9 TDi in just over 18 months of fast driving on all types of roads and it never bothered me.

I replaced it with a BMW diesel and to be honest the BMW was quieter and quicker but not as good allround as the Octavia.

I now have a 1.8 TSi octavia and find that has more road noise than my diesel had.

engine noise on my 1.9 is very muted and civilised. the tyre roar is shocking though.

I made the same change and also find that road noise in the 1.8TSI is more noticeable than the 1.9TDi. I never found the 1.9TDi to be especially noisy so I am putting it down to the oem Bridgestones - always had Hankooks on the TDi.

The 1.9TDi is a little gruff and growly under hard acceleration but cruising along at any speed it was quiet enough. The 1.8TSI is in a different league though - it is seriously quiet and refined!

i have bridgestones on mine.

smooth blacktop and they are ok, but hit a stretch of more open texture surface & they are 'kin horrendous.

Agreed, it just sounds like an old taxi at idle. It's not a particularly pleasant noise when you give it some beans but it does have it's own sort of charm

It's not such a noisy engine that it would ever put you off buying the car, or even in my opinion annoy you to be honest. It's just what diesels designed ten years ago sounded like.

I've had two 1.9 TDI PD's and I never wished for the engine to be quieter.
