pd130 to a pd150

Featured Replies

just thought i would get everyones thoughts on this as its been bugging me since people first started posting threads

people say you need a new re-map to make the most of replacing there pd130 with a pd150

now the only thing as far as i can see that will need tweaking is the fuelling slighty

as for the car not running aswell on a pd150 and makes less power. im failing to see how, the ecu controls how hard the turbo boosts it doesnt say to the turbo 'produce 180bhp' it simply tells the turbo what boost it wants e.g. re-mapped cars approx 1.8 bar. so regardless of weather you have a pd130 or a pd150 it will be boosting at 1.8bar (rough figures) surely even with the fuel needing to be tweaked it would still be making more power.

anyone got any opinions or comments just interested to see what peoples opinions are on this really

Yeah - Crux IS

1) Fit a PD150 turbo in like for like in place of PD130, touch nothing else, and it will be slightly more powerful. Probably won't be able to tell. "Might" be slightly more lag low down but if the turbo has been setup right, actuator mainly, it should be fine.

2) To make the MOST of this turbo, you should alter mapping as it can make better sustained boost than a PD130 turbo (slightly more...) However there is nothing wrong with running pd150 turbo on pd130 mapping. They are not that different. I ran a stage 2 hybrid on stock pd130 mapping for a while. Was good - made 151bhp stock :D

So what turbo do I need to put straight on to my engine? I've got engine code BLT, and don't want to delete the EGR.

PD150 turbo is Garrett model number GT1749vb. You might need some other pipework which connects to it as well - most likely the lower boost hose.

This is what mine is running at the moment. PD150 turbo on a remap for the old PD130.

Just pricing up a clutch and I will have her remapped again to make the most of it! orrr do I just get the map done first?..... :D

Well, if the clutch is OK, get the mapping done and just ensure you don't use that clutch ripping torque. ;) Note from your dyno peak torque of 270 lb/ft may seem low but yours it hits at 2700-2800 rpm. THAT alone will preserve your clutch as its peak torque at below 2000 rpm that shreds clutches. That torque plot shows how the PD150 turbo tends to give power a bit higher up.

(Peak torque of 270 @ 2700 is probably like peak torque of 320 to 330 @ 2000 revs ;))

Yeh the clutch is OK at the moment, I just don't want it to cause issues whilst having her remapped. Look at Trevor's fabia, that's pushing out far more than I would expect :D

Next issue is where to get it remapped, I know of a very good tuner @ AJEC Racing, but not sure how familiar he is with the VAG diesel's. Other option seems to be Shark at the moment, been watching the other thread and I'm quite impressed.

Shark FTW :) bit of self promotion never hurt anyone. I know it would be a bit of a drive for you simon but we are currently running an STS group buy where the STS is free so all you pay for is the map, and you can tune your car at home, then revert to standard if you fancy at any point. Save driving a long way to see us

So if I get this turbo, I won't need to delete my EGR?

It'll be a straight swap for my PD130 turbo? Simply unbolt the old one, and fit the new one (apart from the boost pipe you mentioned).

No promises, but thats the way I understand it. Not sure on the EGR setup. I would hope the EGR connection/port is in the same spot on the exhaust manifold.

just get it mapped you know it makes sence, mine peaks at 2700 so your be fine just dont boot it under 2k just like a standard map.

mine made almost identical figures to your before the second map strange eh 168.6lol and 264lb/ft

sorry to go off topic

If the BLT engines are "supposed" to be running approx 150bhp standard on a PD130 turbo, what is the benefit of fitting a PD150 turbo, apart from stronger internals?

Thats only really as they start out the box, either ASZ or BLT will only remap to 170ish bhp safely due to the turbo. Put the 150 on and you`ve got more scope. Engine code doesnt really come into it once they`ve been mapped

So, say i fitted a PD150 then got it chipped, the gain would be more than chipping a BLT PD130? I didnt want to have the expense of a new clutch yet, just want more torque, but will be fitting a new intercooler and 312mm brakes 1st.

Yeah, the reason that a asz/blt pd130`s limit when mapped is 170bhp is because the turbo will just go pop. Fit a bigger turbo and hey presto, can cope with more power. You could get a nice, smooth map, to around 180-200bhp, and driven correctly keep a standard clutch if your not planning to run santa pod runs weekly. Would make for a quick but reliable car for reasonable money imo

I'm looking to do the same thing with mine (BLT engine code) but want a turbo that will bolt straight on without messing with the EGR valve. That's why I was looking to go down the hybrid pd130 route, as I know the turbo will bolt straight on an match my EGR valve, etc

So should a PD150

Matt

pd150 will fit egr no problem

there must be over 1000 people with pd150 turbo's on there vrs's

In the 3 years i`v had mine its gone from a few to lots of them! Wonder how many will end up in a ditch tho

Matt

Any particular model/version of the PD150 turbo? As I think there's 2 different engine codes for the 150 engine?

Is this STS offer for the Stage 1 only though?

Yeh I noticed that the graphs were very similar! Lets hope I can get somewhere near what you have now too :giggle: Although I am still a bit concerned about the torque, but I treat her well anyway so hopefully won't be too much of an issue.
