possible decat required

Featured Replies

When I had my last service, I was told the exhaust was blowing a bit near the cat. Now I can't afford to replace the cat so I'm thinking I'll just decat it instead.

Is this something that your average exhaust place can do at short notice, or a bit more specialist with parts needing to be ordered?

Cheers,

Martin

For MOT you will need cat or a friendly tester. My cat was knackered so I looked on here and bought one off another member - had it delivered and fitted for under £100. Alternatively there are decat pipes on ebay for about £100 if you look. Depends whether or not you want hassle at MOT time

Any exhaust place should be able to do it, it'll just be a piece of pipe that replaces the cat

Diesels do not need a cat pass an MOT.

My understanding is that a cat isn't required for a diesel.

I wonder if sticking the family pet in the boot while gaffer taped up (to prevent scratching/hairs/etc) would be sufficient if the tester asked where the cat was

You will be amazed to find out that many exhaust places don't even have a welder these days. Try to find a custom exhaust place.

It should cost you about £50 to put a straight pipe in place of the cat. Make sure you have some kind of hanger where the cat was as the only way you could fail an MOT is if the exhaust wasn't properly supported. Get them to check the mid and rear hangers - if the pipe near the cat is blowing, then these may need attention too.

Just called national tyres in Bridlington.

Asked them about removing cat and fitting straight through section.

"not advisable and we would not do it."

Why might this be?

Any ideas on cost?

As I said, it should be about £50. Most seem to charge about an hour in labour.

National tyres have gone down hill these days, they just have very basic exhaust and tyre fitters and are unable to make or do owt complicated.

There used to be a custom exhaust place in Scarbough but haven't seen them advertised for a while.

Look for a powerflow dealer in your area. That's who did mine, cost me £50

Leeds or doncaster have stainless steel exhaust specialists that can make them

A & A motors in Hull are a VAG specialist and might be available to do this tomorrow if required.
