Loving my Spiders but...

Featured Replies

Not really digging the loss in power and seem to be getting less miles. A re map is out of the question at the minute. I'm thinking of going back to the standard alloys for now.

Bit of a pointless post but just thought I'd write it up.

I guess because iv come from heavy wheels to spiders they feel really light to me

Matt

What profile tyres are you running on them? I would have thought if the profile was low enough then there wouldn't be that much in it between the standard 16s and the 17" Spiders?

Marc

They made a difference when I fitted them to a Fabia as well. I went back to running 16s on wheel weight grounds, and also as I felt it drove better on 16s, as you got better steering feel with a slightly larger sidewall.

Just my 2p's worth, over the course of owning 3 Fabias. I'm sure some will disagree :)

No problems with mine, think its all in the mind...

Had various 17's on my old Ibiza FR now they all weighed alot different! 17x8's are alot heavies than 17x7 for example.

Going from spiders to Porsche twist reps didn't make a difference from twists to bbs lm reps wow the lms are so light and they're 8's

Not in my case anyway. The 17" Spiders weigh more than the OEM 16s. By 2-3Kg IIRC. Dropped my average tank MPG by 3-4.

A wider wheel doesn't have to weigh any more either. Depends on the construction and materials used. My current 18x8 Turinis weigh less than the 17x7 that Skoda originally fitted.

Tyres have alot to do with weight of the wheel too, some budgets are ****e and weigh a ton!

There is no doubt that they make the car feel less eager to accelerate than 16" wheels, however there shouldn't be any real impact on fuel economy. I certainly haven't noticed it.

So how much do Skoda VRS 16" rims actually weigh?

And how heavy are the 17" Spiders?

...however there shouldn't be any real impact on fuel economy. I certainly haven't noticed it.

You've got a rotational mass issue to consider there, no? Larger diameter wheel, which is heavier - therefore requiring more effort for that to rotate at the same speed as the OEM 16" wheel...

Noticed your not happy with the 17"s if you decide you want to go back tio standard 16" im looking to go up and in seems we are in the same area.

Dont worry if you are planning to hold on to them ??

15's are the future lol, try running 18's im lucky if i break 50mpg with the 18's on, 15's on i get near 60 all the time, same driving style same route same time of day etc

they do fit straght on with the correct size tyres, although will look like a 4x4 unless lowered, and please turn caps lock off, no need to shout

I'm taking my spiders off soon too. It does feel different and also the stick out beyond the tyres (205/40/17) and get easily damaged.

How can anyone run 17's or even 18's with low profile tyres with all these ferkin pot holes and speed bumps about.

You need beefy tyres in this country!

Gone are the days of smooth road driving.

dont usually go over any speedbumps but just take them slow if i have to, its suprising but 18's and coilys and its still not too harsh, not too many pot holes round here luckily

Impressive figures. Though the trip computer isn't that accurate. You're better off filling the tank and seeing how many miles you get out of it. Then work out your mpg yourself.

There's lots of potholes around here but I know where they all are and just avoid them. I also don't have to go any speed bumps, I can't remember the last time I went over one to be honest... I love how Spiders can change the looks of the car:

My first reaction to this post is that it's incorrect, for the following reasons;

1. The overall diameter of the wheel and tyre is the same, or the speedo would be inaccurate.

2. As has already been pointed out, the tyre can weigh as much as the rim and that's ALL further from the hub. The smaller the wheel, the taller the tyre side-wall and the heavier the tyre.

A wider tyre has a bigger contact patch so it may use more fuel because of that, but not to the extent that folks are claiming.

So that's why I'm thnking it's not right, however given that it's Wardy saying it I'm prepared to be educated if I'm wrong.

if you look at the fabia straight on when wearing bigger rims you can see most of the tyre sticking out, this i think is the major cause of the mpg difference due to the drag, as well as the weight of the rims too, in my instance with the 18's are alot heavier by 3kgs each and the extra drag caused = alot less mpg have a look at this pic to see how much the tyre sticks out the bumper

Lovely motor. I really am in two minds about switching back.
