Loving my Spiders but...

Featured Replies

So how much do Skoda VRS 16" rims actually weigh?

And how heavy are the 17" Spiders?

I weighed the unused 17" (spare) spider alloy and tyre (contisport 205 50 R17) off my Octy vRS a few months ago.

From memory (which I admit is bad lol) it weighed 21 kgs.

With the correct size tyre fitted to suit a fabia ie 205 40 R17, I'd expect the weight to be slightly less than 21 kgs.

IMO the quality of the tyre's fitted to the 17" spiders and the inflation pressure will be the biggest factors in effecting performance and mpg.

Cheap bubget tyres, size for size can be heavy and have a higher rolling resistance compared to premium brand tyres !!!

My first reaction to this post is that it's incorrect, for the following reasons;

1. The overall diameter of the wheel and tyre is the same, or the speedo would be inaccurate.

2. As has already been pointed out, the tyre can weigh as much as the rim and that's ALL further from the hub. The smaller the wheel, the taller the tyre side-wall and the heavier the tyre.

A wider tyre has a bigger contact patch so it may use more fuel because of that, but not to the extent that folks are claiming.

So that's why I'm thnking it's not right, however given that it's Wardy saying it I'm prepared to be educated if I'm wrong.

I'm not arguing the point about overall diameter (including the tyre), as that's corrected by using a 17" tyre with a lower profile sidewall. So that's fine, not in dispute. The accuracy of the speedo is changed *slightly*, but easily within acceptable tolerance.

My point was regarding the additional force needed to actually turn a larger, and heavier wheel. Moment forces spring to mind here. After all, there must be some reason for the fact that fuel economy is altered when a larger and heavier wheel is fitted, even if the overall rotational diameter is the same.

if you look at the fabia straight on when wearing bigger rims you can see most of the tyre sticking out, this i think is the major cause of the mpg difference due to the drag, as well as the weight of the rims too, in my instance with the 18's are alot heavier by 3kgs each and the extra drag caused = alot less mpg have a look at this pic to see how much the tyre sticks out the bumper

That's a very good point. I reckon it would make a significant difference too.

I would of thought the surface difference of the tires have negligible difference, the wheels are rotating and the air will be either drawn in a particular direction and/or have a pressure difference (I assume) creating a air pocket of some sort thus increase 'slip' and reducing the difference between the 'true surfaces' of the tires.

Im no aerospace engineer but so I maybe talking complete balls :D, but my point is aero of surface difference of tyres will be negligible (in terms of mpg/performance) compared to unsprung weight.

they do fit straght on with the correct size tyres, although will look like a 4x4 unless lowered, and please turn caps lock off, no need to shout

hi ye sorry about caps lock bad habbit didnt mean it in a rude shouting way mate and ye i was wondering how tall its going to stand with 17nch and i dont realy want to lower it so was thinking the fabia vrs alloys i think there 16inch ?? are they ?? with some low profiles what ever they are im getting them powder coated gloss black :) thanks for the info anyways apriciate it

Yes, Mk1 Fabia vRS wheels are 16" and use a 205/45/16 tyre.
