Upgrading to 18" Alloys

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone is running a MK1 on 18" wheels? Any feedback on ride and handling much appreciated...

Cheers,

Robbie

Think Baker21 is your man, he has tried most options

Thanks for that......

Robbie

Very broadly speaking, as the wheel & tyre combination gets heavier the ride and handling get worse. Generally but not always, larger wheels result in the wheel and tyre together weighing more.

Sometimes a wider wheel and/or a wider tyre will feel more stable, which is nice reassurance if you are a nervous driver. But this is the antithesis of nimble, so might not be what you want.

Ultimately, though, most people who choose larger wheels do so for aesthetic reasons.

Maybe I should stick with the standard 17"s.....Not sure.

Many thanks,

Robbie

Mines on 17's, from experience if you are doing a lot of driving on this island stay on the motorways. My work takes me all over the country and I've lost a tyre on adverage every 7000 miles from potholes. Sometimes I consider even switching to 16's just to save money, IMHO 18's would be nice to look at but thats about it.

Hi Baker21,

Just trying to figure out the PM thing on here, but I did read you're reply and thanks for that...I'm still in two minds about the 18"s, I might just stick with the original 17"s and see how I go. I do a lot of driving around the country (45K plus per year) and although the roads here in Ireland are getting much better, there are a good few gems when it comes to bad roads... You wouldn't believe some of them..!

My next question for you is replacement Xenon bulbs. I wont need them yet, but is it correct that a D2S (or D2C) is the right bulb for the car. Edition 100 with Bi-Xenons? Also are they a DIY fit or do they need realignment by a professional? I've found a company (autobulbsdirect.com) in the UK that supply them and DRL strips (which I'd like to fit), at reasonable money.

Thanks a mill,

Robbie

You should be able to access your PM system in the top right hand corner of your screen.........

D2S for the Xenon Lamps but this is only for Dipped and Main Beam, the additional Main Beam on the Xenon and Halogen Lamps is H3, from my side best to get the bumper off to change the bulbs but easy to do on your own if your car savy, as for DRL strips, not really my thing...........

I was hoping it wasn't a bumper off job for the bulbs. Is there no way of removing air box etc to access the lamp unit from behind? D2S and H3, finally sorted, cheers...

Personally, I thing the DRL strips (white LED's ) look great ad really update the look, but that's just me..

Thanks a mill,

Robbie

PS: Run that PM thing by me again?

Yes you can remove the air box, etc and struggle to get your hand in but it's entirely up to you.........

That's cool, being a Lighting Design Engineer for automotive, it's a bit of a pet hate of mine but then that's just my opinion.......... :|

Top right of the screen you will see your username in a green box, click on the drop down arrow and then click on 'Messenger (1 New) and you will find what your looking for, or just click on the link from the email Briskoda.net will have generated from my response.......

Thanks....I had the same sort of trouble with my last car, Volvo S60, very awkward to change bulbs (and it loved them) but I managed i. Hopefully I can do the same with the Superb....Had a look at the PM thing and get it now, thanks.

Thanks a mill for all the info and I'll post more when I get the car next week..

Cheers,

Robbie

PS: Can DRL strips be wired into the sidelight as I dont want them on all the time, just when the light's are on?

45K miles/year, I thought my 30k on our roads was a lot and I dont drive for a living. 45k/year in a 05 car, you must be self employed like me   Removing the bumper is not a major job and makes access easy. Let me know what DRL's you find, if I get a set I'll be wiring them for Daylight Running, May see you on the road someday. Of course you will recognise my Superb if its towing one of its trailers, clue below.

Robbie
