steering wheel shaking...SOMETIMES

Featured Replies

good afternoon guys,

been in few places, they are 'not too sure' where's the problem, so asking you guys, before going to dealership (and getting ripped off). so, here's the story:

had a suspension damage, fixed everything, only one brake disc was slightly bent (steering slightly shaking). did nearly 5k (disks were 2 months old) miles without issues except little speed-dependent squeaking , then steering started shaking badly while breaking. got new disks and pads, went to garage, replaced disks, pads, both wishbones. went for a test drive - was much better now, BUT.... still vibrating a bit (when breaking and turning especially). got track rod replaced and it some more difference, but hasn't sorted issues:

1) little squeaking from wheel (starts at ~5mph and stays till i hit motorway), speed dependent, goes away as soon as i touch brake pedal (at least a bit). replacing disks and pads made no difference, it's there for 8k miles now.

2) steering vibrates. up to 65-70 miles i have no issues, but as soon as i hit those speeds and accelerate/drive uphill, steering vibrates. what's weird - steering wheel does not vibrate every single time i accelerate. i'd say 7 out of 10 times it does vibrate.

3) steering wheel is shaking while breaking. if i'm leaving motorway and braking at traffic lights on slip road, it is the most noticeable. 70mph down to ~35mph is ok, then it starts shaking slightly, gets worse, worse and then dissapears at ~20mph. happens not always.

anyone got any ideas? seriously don't want to drop off my car at dealership for 'front suspension and transmission rebuild' :/

regards the squeaking from wheel .... seeing as it goes when u press the brake pedal seems to be that the brake caliper is 'binding' .. also if uve had a smash ( to damage wheel in first place ) have u checked that a) wheel isnt buckled .. b ) is tracking is still ok ?

Wierd but had similar on my old Omega. Both front wheels were badly out of balance.

So some times no vibration. other times really bad. It seems to depend on where the wheels were in relation to each other, thereby cancelling the imbalance. Had to replace both front tyres as they couldn't be balanced due to amount of imbalance.

i've damaged only one wheel (hit the curb) and it was replaced as would not even balance. tracking was done a number of times also. that should not be a problem.

as for squeaking, it is not one long squeak, more like zip zip zip zip and gets faster as i accelerate. could not find any wear marks on disk or rim, so running out of ideas :(

If car has been in a collision and with all the damaged parts that you have stated that's been replaced, then

it is quite possible vehicle needs to be checked for alignment (it's not crabbing / moving sideways like a crab when being driven).

Wheel alignment front to back and get the tracking checked, wheels checked to see if buckled and then get balanced.

Steering rack and column checked for any damage.

going to see my mate today and try his wheels as per goonybird's and your's advice.

any ideas how to check steering rack and column if it is damaged? sounds like a good idea.

cheers
