Difficult to change passenger rear wheel bearing?

Featured Replies

Getting a squealing at 30-40mph.

Anyone changed it themselves & how difficult is it? I've got a Haynes manual around somewhere...

Rear hub and bearing are one part. Jack up, and axle stands. Remove wheel and brake caliper. Remove hub center cap, remove hub center nut. Remove hub with puller. Clean and grease half shaft, drive on new hub making sure it's square to the axle shaft. Refit other bits and test drive.

Make sure it's not your rear brakes that are causing the noise first!

Sounds simple enough. What's a puller by the way

The rear brake caliper has always squealed when breaking, but it does seem like a wheel bearing noise.

Do you know the part number for the hub by any chance?

Also, any idea what size the hub nut is? I remember having trouble finding a socket large enough when I was doing a 206 hub some time ago.

Thanks

Have a look at the Handbrake Sticky at the top of this forum. It's beginning to sound like rear brakes causing your noise.

Just had a read through the article.

I'm off to VW tomorrow to collect some parts so I'll order some springs now & see if that solves it.

Don't forget to slacken off the handbrake cable before you fit the springs. Then re-adjust the handbrake.

A puller is:

Wheel hub puller

I had a similar issue, changing it was a simple enough process as listed above. Key tip from me:

If you have waited a while before doing it... Make sure you have a blowtorch to hand (can be a cheap one), and a thick chisel or crowbar. It's invaluable for heating up the hub bearing in order to help get it off!!!

Moral of the story: When you know there's a problem, if you can even only just afford to do it - do it. Don't wait. Lol :giggle:

Ensure you buy the correct ABS Hub assembly, there are two types.

The one for the ABS type has a magnetic ring at rear of hub for the ABS sensor to pick-up.

Whereas the other type does not have a magnetic ring , (but will fit) so sensor now will trigger some warning on your dash-board (I have been told).

Price around £70 from Skoda, quoted last year to me, E-Bay £25.00.

To add to all of the above, when I redid my suspension etc, I had my Hubs off (were not making noise) and if you look inside the bearing (the contact area with the stub axle) there is a gap between the bearings!!I managed to clean using cotton buds and meths then repacked with the pale yellow coloured high temp bearing grease, and boy did they spin freely!! Done 5yrs ago and still ok!!
