Tyre Wear!

Featured Replies

Overinflated tyres can't give you poor mileage.

Hi Kiwibacon,

I'm guessing Oggy meant poor mileage with regard to tyre life, not poor consumption - mpg (which I think you were referring to)...

I would agree with both of you... I trust you will agree:

ie. slight over inflation should give you a better consumption (mpg)

but if too over inflated you will most likely generate more tyre wear (mid section more worn).

As with everything, its all a balance. Over time I've now accumulated 3 tyre pressure guages and 2 foot pumps. They all measure differently but IMO the foot pumps are totally different & measure way out. I would not recommend that foot pumps are used when trying to determine the tyre pressures accurately.

Unfortunately it seems there is less leeway now-a-days (especially it seems with our Superbs) so its worth trying out what fits you (your tyre pressure guage) best.... clear as mud...?

Yes good point. In all my years trying I've never managed to wear the centre out of a car tyre. But it must be possible.

I think I spend too much time going around corners.

I set my tyre pressures by going on tyre temperature. Go from your usual cruising speed to a stop and feel which parts of the tyre are warm. If it's the centre then they are too tight. If it's the edges then it's too soft. Others use a chalk line drawn across the tyre to similar effect.

Oops sorry, yes I did mean tyre wear, not fuel consumption.

Sorry for any confusion.

I am here: http://tapatalk.com/map.php?0vctyz

A lot of people have commented on an Australian forum about poor alignment on new Skodas. Our cars come by sea and I have no idea how they are strapped down. The 4WD vehicles seem to be to most affected. I once took a car for a test drive and it handled like a bag of *&^%$; I checked the tyre pressures at a local garage and they were 55 PSI! Apparently they (used) to pump up the tyres for cars in transit. I also test drove another new car that had 18 PSI. Check your tyre pressures with a quality gauge, I use a Michelin unit that can be calibrated. Does that make me OCD??  I used to get over 30,000 Km from Michelins on my Audi Turbo quattro and it was often driven like it was stolen :-) but once I went too far on a dirt road and tore a sidewall, no idea when it happened as I only found out when I arrived at my destination. Then it started to pour with rain as I changed the tyre :-( I will always buy tyres for grip and not long life because of the way I drive. I have already triggered the electronics when "attacking" a local road in the wet and 3 of the Contis were still hanging on.... Closer to 60 than 50 so I am too old to change my ways..

Got 14000 out of my continental sports on a 140CR Elegance Combi which I thought was a bit naf, gone to the Michelin sports and after 2500 miles, based on the Michelin web site where you can enter tread depth at monthly intervals, it reckons I will get closer to 20000 on them and I am inclined to agree based on my own maths.

  • 5 weeks later...

My 1.6CR twindoor turned 18k miles yesterday, still on original Conti's

Front are pretty near to the wear indicator so I expect them to be changed in next 2-3 weeks. Rears are almost as new.

As an aside I gave the car a good wash and polish ( snow foam, rinse, 2BM handwash, rinse, dry, wash and gloss wit Autoglym) looks like new again and I didn't even cry when it rained- sight of beading water on bonnet was evidence of my hard work

Like others nearly 12 months down and no problems to report

OK- despite posting the above a few months ago the tyres held on better than I expected. Two new front tyres fitted yesterday at 23,500 miles. Rears still doing fine.

Noted improvement in handling and I think less road noise with Michelins now on front

Just picked up my SE Estate estate 1.8tsi 4X4 end of May. The SE has 17in wheels and they came with pirelli P7's does anyone how the compare with the Cont2 that seemed to have been fitted previously. As a matter of fact they seem very quiet compared to my Scout fitted with Dunlop Sport 01 which I got 22k and not down to wear indicator.
