Bolero upgrade

Featured Replies

AFAIK the FL Octys use BAP to communicate between the HU and Maxidot, the pre-FL use CAN

....just for info, i fitted this exact upgrade at the weekend to my (06) and the MFSW volume buttons work fine? i also get track listing in Maxidot.

What year car did the Bolero come out of?

Yes, I am. The sound quality is much better than the Stream/Stream MP3/Nexus I have had fitted in the last 6 months !!!!!!

And much easier to play mp3s back from the SD card than messing about with the Dension Gateway 300 I had.

The downsides I have at the moment are

  • Display Brightness - I need to turn the headlights on and then off again to get the backlight to come on
  • MFSW volume controls don't work - slightly annoying but not a big issue as the next/previous track buttons work
  • No Audio display on Maxidot - not bothered about this in the slightest
  • Doesn't detect the boot mounted CDC - not bothered about this as I will take this out anyway and free up the space in the cubby hole

Also, this is the best TP and TIM implementation I have had on any HU - I have actually started using it after 15 years of not using TP!

The Bolero I got was brand new and out of a new car so is likely to be a BAP unit so that probably explains the issues. Also, it probably only works with the MFSW from a FL which (I think) has a scroll wheel for volume, not buttons.

Just need to get a genuine hands free kit now as I have seen how well these integrate with the Bolero/Columbus units and touch screen on Mike Holroyds car.

The only one of the above issues that might affect me would be the screen brightness. Could your problem with this be related to the suggestion that its a BAP unit?

AFAIK, yes.

AFAIK, yes.

So, i should look for one that is CAN not BAP to avoid these problems?

Do you know when they stopped fitting the CAN type?

What year car did the Bolero come out of?

..i think it was (09)

Which would make it a CAN model I reckon.

I'm still thinking of upgrading to the Bolero or Columbus.

Would these be the right gateways if mine needs updating?

eBay Gateway

eBay Gateway

eBay Gateway

What are the differences?

Thanks,

Dan

On a 56 plate, the chances are you WILL need to change the gateway, mine was a revision 'H', it is recognised that 'K' or above is required.

The first link is one of the latest types. The guy I got mine from originally got his from this eBayer.

The second link.....Hmmm! Not sure about that one.

Link 3, is a revision 'K' its the last letter of the code you need to look at, but for the 5-6 quid difference I would buy the new one in the first link which is guaranteed to work.

Before you spend your dosh though, you can confirm which revision you have either through VCDS, or just physically look, your gateway should be behind the glove box, 10 minute job to get out.

Also it might be worth checking the for sale section on this forum and the mk5 gti one also, as these often crop up for a decent price.

Thanks matey, helps a lot.

Do you know what the seller of the AD revision unit will accept as his best offer?!

Can't help there mate, tbh they've sold quite a lot, and it was £15 p+p previously, and bare in mind these gateways are £140 from the stealers. With that in mind I don't think they will budge on price, but no harm in trying. ;)

As I said before though, confirm you actually need it first then trawl the various MKV Golf platformed car forums and see if a bargain is to be had!

Just pulled mine out, it's revision H.

What will happen if I just fit the Bolero without upgrading the gateway?

Suppose I could sell my gateway though. Got to be a few quid maybe....

The main issue is battery drain, if you fit it tonight the battery would be dead with in 24 hours, apparently the unit remains live even when the engine is off!

I advertised mine 3 times for 10 quid....no dice. I'm glad tbh as I sold my Bolero and gateway and refitted the old one.

Ok.

Bolero now purchased. Now to buy a gateway!

He accepted my offer on the gateway. Now just have to wait for it all to arrive.

Just realised I need to change the facia as well now! This is starting to get expensive!

Is the correct part number:

•Dash trim for MFD2/3 with Climatronic (silver) - 1Z0 858 069 R 2AU

Mine has the 3 knobs climate control.

Thanks,

Dan

I have the dash trim from the bolereo still! Its from an FL dash, brushed metal. Would it fit yours? If so, tenna!

I suppose so. Does yours have the 3 knobs for climate control?

Like this (not my car)

That is the same centre console as mine, with climatronic rather than standard A/C, the Bolero for the Octavia is the same size as the stream! You must being getting the style from the Superb?? which requires the same facia as the Columbus/MFD3......

Oh right. I'm buying m0bov's Bolero. His came out of a 59 plate Octavia, so it should just go straight in then.

If his is from factory, then yes it should be the same!

My trim has the 3 dials but has the Fl Climatronic so not sure if it will fit. Yes, the Bolereo came from the factory!

The A/C is irrelevant for Dan as long as your Bolero is the same as the one in the first picture I posted, I got mine from another member which was factory fit in his FL Octavia, so if I was a betting man it will slot sraight in the Stream's hole....ooer!
