Running in a new TDi CR170 VRS

Featured Replies

tried searching but couldnt find anything of use does anyone have an opinion of the best method to run in the new CR170 engine I picked up on 18/03/2011 drove 260 miles mostly with cc on and sat at 70-85 depending on speed limit (went across EU) I will be keeping this car for at least 5 years and will do the occasional 2500 mile round trip the rest little trips into town etc.. How long would you guys run it in and what sort of way im just keeping it below 2500RPM cruising at 2200-2300 ish when on motorways?

I just drove mine normally when I picked it up. Didn't allow the engine to labour in too high a gear, nor rev the nuts off the thing, and never have done. After 9 months and 10,000 miles, it hasn't used a drop of oil, and I manage 50mpg for my 35 mile round commute between Edinburgh and Livingston. Happy days.

Hope you're enjoying your new car.

as above, let it warm up then drive it as normal, enjoy

Driving as normal seems to be the default advice these days. We did that when we got our Fabia vRS 5 years ago and it used about half a litre of oil in the first 10k and then not a drop since and has been faultlessly reliable.

I think it's best not to sit on the motorway at a constant speed though. I'm pretty sure I've heard that you're best to vary the load on the engine (i.e revs).

Doubt it makes much difference these days though to be honest- modern manufacturing techniques and materials probably mean that everything is huky-dory out of the factory and doesn't need time to bed-in.

(Caveat- that's not fact, just my opinion! :giggle: )

I researched this when I got my new VRS. In brief, drive normally but with no excessive loading of the engine. One thing I did pick up on however is that the driving should be mixed. ie: local and motorway . It is not good practice to run in just by doing motorway work.

I hope you enjoy your new car.

Wait for the temp to reach normal then drive it like you stole it.

ALWAYS drive gently when the engine is cold (whether running in or with 100k on the clock)

ALWAYS let the engine get to full operating temp before giving it wide throttle openings (whether running in or with 100k on the clock)

When warm drive it normally, give it wide throttle openings but try not to exceed 3/4 throttle

Don't let the engine labour in a gear that is too low

DO NOT RED LINE

You want to bed the rings in which is why you need to give it something to do but the bearing surfaces are really rough (compared to what they are like when bedded in) so you need to treat them with some respect as well.

Check out "Honest John's" website, he has a really good guide on there

about running in diesel engines. I followed for my Fabia VRS and never

used a drop of oil.

Good luck with your new car,

Chris.

Some sound advice

Some sound advice

Except you can take it to the redline when it is fully warmed. I have and know others on here that did this. It will bed the piston rings in better. Best way is to vary the rev range without putting too much load on the engine (ie gunning it up hill with a car full). I have just put under half a litre of oil in at 12k

I know cars that have been run in as per the book and they use up to a litre every 1k.

I ran mine in properly and apart from the first service at 22k I have never put oil in it. its on 36k now

cheers for all the advice took the car out for its first real drive since getting it let coolant temp get to 90 and oil temp to about 90 as well then started to widen the bar a bit on the old throttle opening :D CAN YOU BELIEVE ITS THE FIRST TIME IVE ACTUALLY ACCELERATED IN IT AND I GOT IT FRIDAY!!!!!! NICE reminds me of my remapped Fabia VRS CR standard is SO smooth power delivery is a lot better threw the rev range no PD PUNCH of turbo on turbo off

Will get a few miles in now but still just under 300 miles AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (my first brand new car)

There's only two rules I follow when I drive: -

1. Drive it gently until it is warm (oil temp min of 75 degrees); and

2. Drive it gently at the end of a drive, giving it an idle time of around 1 min before turning off the engine (to make sure the turbo has time to wind down properly).

Done this with every diesel turbo car I have owned and NEVER had any serious issues.

Why would they bother putting "Running In" details in the manual if it wasn't relevant....?

....just wonderin...!

Dont forget the odomoeter may have 10 miles on the clock from new [ie delivery mileage] but the engine has been on a test bed in the factory where they go through the rev range. Its probably done 500 miles before its bolted to the car

Sorry to disagree, VW group, Honda and Toyota have all done away with bench testing engines. With only 5 % being bench tested.

Just notched up 11k miles in ours, hasn't need any oil thus far. Love the power delivery of the engine and love the fact that it can do 50mpg.

Oh and good choice of colour & spec as well
