Using a phone abroad.

Featured Replies

I'm going to Argentina for my Brother's wedding and SWMBO are using the excuse to travel around for a bit. I want to take my phone (HTC Desire HD) with me for occasional calls/texts and using the internet at Wi-Fi Hotspots only. I want to make sure I avoid huge data charges from the phone continually doing........ well, whatever it does. What do I need to do? I've checked in Menu -Settings - Wireless & networks - Mobile Networks, and unchecked the Data Roaming. Have I missed anything?

Thanks.

If you were really paranoid about it connecting you could just set up a new APN with some spoof details and then it couldn't connect even if it wanted to.

It's under 'wireless & networks/mobile networks/access point names' where you can add a new one.

Thanks! I've found the option that you refer to. What would setting up a new APN do? How does it work? Can you tell I'm not technically minded???

It's basically the info that the phone needs for the data to connect to the outside world. Tell it some rubbish and it can't connect. When you come back home just pick the original APN and everything will be back to normal.

With Windows mobile you could just use an application called "no data" and it disabled all the mobile data connections, not sure on android.

What I would do and not rule out, as it could work out cheaper is get a cheapo payg phone in the destination country and use that to make calls. The calls are usually a lot cheaper, even to international destinations than using your own phone. I have sim cards for France and Spain, and a sim free phone and just swap the card as needed. Phoneing the UK from argentina on your UK nobile is going to cost a fortune, text messages could be more than £1 each since neither the calls or texts come out of your allowance.

These are T-Mobiles charges from Argentina to UK.

We're only off for 2 weeks so I had discounted this as an option. At a potential £1 a text I think I'll check with Orange what the prices wil be though.

Thanks.

Thanks. Very Useful. No more than 3 test a day for me. Perhaps there is a place for a thread like this to be pinned somewhere as I imagine a lot of people will be off on their hols this summer with similar questions about roaming and data charges..........

There are apps in the android store that let you switch the APN connection off and on without having to muck about changing the settings.

Switch off roaming on your phone to avoid big bill. This I've learned from bitter experience - usual monthly bill £35, last June (including one week in the Caribbean) £178.

Lesson learnt!

Switch off always on data and mobile data roaming.

That should stop accidental connections.
