VRS Tyres

Featured Replies

I've read a few things about the tyres on the VRS - and it seems that some folk who have recently received their cars from the dealer have had better tyres on the car from new than previously issued cars.

Does anyone know if there is a tyre spec at build & if this was changed, or if it's luck of the draw?

sorry about the highjack, I wouldnt know but on my ibiza SC i got pirelli Pzeros so i would expect a decent standard.

Can any also say how long the tyres last on a VRS, normal driving with the occasional(frequent) hoon about :D

Personally I dont think you'll find much of a problem with any of the tyres the car comes with. Some come with Dunlops and others with Conti's.

I had a number of Astra SRi XP's with Dunlop SP Sports (they were 225/40 18's) and found them very grippy and didnt wear badly at all. Road noise wasnt that bad either. Conti Sport Contact 3 is probably a better tyre but you'd have to drive the car like an absolute tool to notice the difference.

The main reason I ask is that my previous car (Lupo GTI) came with Dunlop SP (8000?) tyres, & they were horrific, especially in the wet. As soon as I changed them it made a great difference.

It took forever to change them though as they were so hard that they lasted for ages.

On Sunday I was talking to two owners of vRSs. One had Dunlops and the other had Conties. The lad with the Dunlops said they were awefull, as he was getting wheelspin all the time, even in the dry. The lad with Conties (I didn't see which model) said he had no problems at all with them.

mine had the conti's jim was ... yes.. to OP you are likley to get either dunlops or conti's, by all accounts the the contis are a world better, I have done back to back testing in vRS 2's one with dunlops, mine with contis, and the guy with the dunlops was getting constant wheelspin in 1st 2nd 3rd ect (and I get none), lower cornering speeds (I took it relatively gently round the 1st roundabout when I took him out in mine, and he said his wouldn't have cornered that quick! eep... because mine would have cornered much quicker! and he's even had lift-off oversteer, no matter what i do to provke mine I can't get that!

However, one of the best review I saw from a hack of the vRS was on a track, and he said it was good, and it was on the dunlops... so my guess would be they really nead to get up to temperature to perform... so may well be fine in the summer on a hot road, but perform poorly when cold...

talking to people, it is a little like they are two different cars in the way they behave!

Mine has Dunlop Sport Maxx, I must say I have only driven 2500 miles so far, but I have driven in snow and heavy rain on mountain roads.

I havnt had any issues at all with them. I tend to drive sensibly, with hard acceleration (Took it easy in the snow and Ice obviously)...

I think any of the tyre brands on the VRS are premium tyres, so you wont be given dangerously bad ones... I never got an option to select the tyre brand, maybe you can if you ask in advance, Im assuming they are put on when built and the dealer doesnt fit or swap them unless specificaly asked to change them?

Also Im pretty sure it will be possible to spin the wheels with any brand, Just need to know the limits of the tyre. Most people will/should never find the limits of the tyre anyway! It is a lot esier to find the limits with a budget tyre though.

I agree they will be better than any "mid range" or lower tyre (and it is a lottery which ones you get!) but me and can were pushing limits, not "driving carefully", I'm sure under normal conditions there shouldn't be an issue, but I do like to use all the performance from time to time, when the situation is suitable :)

one of the tests we did for example, was a standing start to 60 in dry condition, in sport, by simlpy flooring it. mine would just go without drama, and just a squeek of small wheelspin in first (the perfect granny start for max acceleration)and then gone, 6-7 seconds...

cans car would be wheelspin city, now we had the same engines, electronics ect, same road , same conditions... only difference was the tyres....

maybe his one one of these TSI's which make that fabled 194hp as standard

Dunlops are crap. No contest required. i dont even rate the conti 2s that highly but they are leagues ahead of dunlops especially in the wet

:) gona have to get mine tothe next RR day!

I think the contis are ok, very good in dry, if there isn't too much standing water,ok in wet, BUT until they get to 3 mill... thats when they fail (3mill being the legal limit in germany!) I swear all the clever silicon compounds they use cease at 3 mill! so when we take 'em lower, they just become like quickfit specials! lol...

where abouts are you located. theres a rolling road day at JKM(portsmouth) in april. if you want an accurate result i wouldnt bother with anything other than a dyno dynamics IMO

I'm in the borders.... I've benn to RR days at awsome GTI and RS tuning in the past..... they both run differnt sorts of rollers, don't know which is which though....

RS tuning in Leeds is a DD dyno iirc and from what i gather quite realistic. Awesome smash out some big figures though.

wierd, cause in the fiat (no changes) i got 158 bhp at awsome, and 165bhp at RStuning! lol....... just goes to show, you never can tell.....

a detailed exam of the figures ta awsome was wierd, as the fabis vRS's (1.9 diesel, 6 speed box fwd ect) that were making 170bhp, were making the same at the wheels as mine! (1.9 m/jet diesel, 6-speed box....) but mine was "only" 158 at the fly? I was only loosing 9-10 bhp through the transmission..... yet i was the same at the wheels as some of the vRS's? hhhhmmm, not an exact science I have to say!

I'm pretty sure it's just luck of the draw. I have bought the showroom model (to be collected next Monday, can't wait) and it has the Conti's on it. The other show room model has the Dunlops on it.

I can't say I have an opinion as to which is better. TBH I will probably be opting for summer and winter tires given the weather we had last year. A set of Yoko's for the summer and something a bit different for the winter.

this is one of the things with Awesome. Their calculations from WHp to Flywheel Hp are foten crazy shjowing huge transmission losses. All dyno differs and the flywheel figures are just a guess calculation. Accuracy is all in the wheel horsepower

I agree, WHP is a fact, and we should really go for that if we are to compair maps ect... but people seem to want it at fly HP becausue thats what the manufacturers state, so you can then see a definative increase! (and its just a "calculation" by whatever RR is doing the job) not an ideal situation to judge cars, my fiat may have only had "165bhp" but was an easy match for 180bhp faibias!

is that due to the weight difference inthe cars?

I haven't got the specs, but not sure there is much weight difference...

get the fabia mapped then :giggle: if the guys in the cupras are manging 13.4-13.9 second runs on stage 1 then thats faster than a stock mk2 focus RS. Granted over 100mph the focus RS would annihate the fabia, but up till then you can annoy alot of much morepwoerful machinery id imagine.

I have to concure with Sharkrider in that the Dunlops to the continentals are a silly diffrence the contacts are a suitable road tyre the dunlops are too hard a compound for everyday road use. Though once you can get them hot they improve drasticly, however I still believe they just will not give the outright grip of the continentals.
