  • I spoke to my local dealership when ordering and they said if you get a car pre week 22 it cannot be updated to the new 7 digit postcode thingy? Could be wrong though.

Yes, definitely Amundsen. The brochure just says Amundsen, no mention of + ...........

Does it have Bluetooth and place for sd card, if the satnav is already up and running it's going to be the + , but it does sound like the standard Amundsen did you have 1 or 2 discs

It has a place for an SD card which is what I am using for the SatNav and music. I did not pay for the Bluetooth so I assume not, although there is a telephone button. I was not given any disks but I have questioned this and they are sending me two, one for UK and Ireland, the other major roads in Europe.

It really does look stunning, although I decided to stick with the swing and use my iPhone for the satnav cabled into the MDI. Means I can still control the music through the stereo head unit and the iphone fades the music volume to play satnav directions. Worth the saving I thought :)

?, the Amundsen is so much more than just a navigation tool, the sound quality is awesome plus the integration with the maxi-dot system, the unit is a cracker now it's got 7 digit capabilities

You have the amunsen and not the + unit, however the only difference is bluetooth and onboard memory for satnav, did you get sd card with it? No discs , but the satnav is working without discs or sd card?, you then may have the + unit, if so I thought Bluetooth was standard

I see you are using sd card did it come with the car? You may have the +

Yes, the SD card came with it, however it is just a standard labelled one (2GB) so I suspect the dealer put it in having copied the maps from the CD (which they have now promised to send me). They tell me they are not being sent any more CDs as the maps are being installed at the factory.

I do not think there is any onboard memory, the SatNav will not work without the SD card (or disk) present, and on the media option only CD, SD and AUX are visible. The telephone button merely mutes the sound as far as I can see.

Amundsen is really nice but for those not bothered about Sat Nav and Bluetooth the Swing is perfectly adequate. Has exactly the same amplifier as the Amundsen so sounds no different at all.

From what i've noticed so far the speakers and positioning are very good, but the rigidity of the door cards (being on the most part solid black plastic) and lack of door insulation material causes the cards to vibrate quite strongly with heavy bass....still its a cheap car so I dont expect much more. Probably overall sounds as good if not better than the system in my MK6 Golf, door cards in that rattle a bit too!

Well I don't see how the sound quality is going to be any different, same speakers and amplifier for one and spending some time with the Swings equaliser can give some significant improvements in sound quality, so myself I didn't see the need to spend so much money for a pretty screen. Integration with the maxi-dot is a nice touch but I never have liked looking down to see my navigation system, hence the reason for sticking it on the window.

Each to their own I suppose, and it is a very nice looking bit of kit but I still think its alot of money to pay for a sat-nav thats not as good as TomTom with a pretty screen.

Just out of interest, why do you think it is not as good as the TomTom? I ask because I have my own TomTom and use one for work and expected that the Amundsen SatNav (which uses TeleAtlas maps) would not be as good. To be honest I have been pleasantly surprised and at the moment I think I prefer it (and it was a 'free' extra on my 25% off model).

My main reasons being Traffic, Local Search, Eco routes and Speed Camera's... I know the latter is easy to overcome which is 'dont speed' but I like being reminded when I'm close to a speed camera :p

General navigation wise I would be inclined to say there's probably not much difference between the two.

Amundsen has traffic info

Amundsen has traffic info

it does? Gawd yet another thing to put on the list of things my dealer didnt know.../sigh

I have to agree OEM sat navs are very nice and if money were no object expect i'd no doubt have one. Fact of the matter is on the whole the arent as well specified as a standalone unit such as the most current tomtoms or garmins.

TMC is pretty pants and has been around for years, I can get a TMC cable for my tomtom but cant see the point as more often than not by the time you've heard about a jam your heading straight for it anyway (or its no longer there!). Live services (the data enabled devices you can buy now) are much better; admittedly you have to pay for a subscription but they are considerably more advanced.

I'm all for buying a portable unit every few years and binning it when it becomes old hat. Big problem with OEM systems is they tend to age quite badly and after 4-5 years they are s**te compared to the latest offerings. It's fine if you change your car all the time but if your buying something to hold on to, after a few years the sat nav will be useless. Look at all the people with early MK5 Golfs who have spent a fortune changing their outdated RNS2 units (which probably cost over a grand to spec) for the new RNS510....all well and good but i'd rather just have a decent CD player and MDI which will last the life of the car without becoming too old school and have a decent portable unit all the time.

Something else which makes me laugh, I gather the RNS510/Columbus despite is high spec (HDD, phone integration etc) cannot be specified with DAB radio (certainly cant be on the new Golfs)...give it a few years and you'll have a head unit that wont be all that much cop for navigation and no good for radio either

That's fair enough Seboni, good that they're adding features to the unit that will no longer be options. They do still get old though and you're stuck with staring at them in the dash of your car. It's not so bad with a CD player.

Aye, they do get old but ive always used a tomtom1 and yes it was good infact i still have it in the other fabia, the amundsen is far better than that it, although its 3 times the price you do get a great sounding unit with reversing audible and visual alarm, and no cables

The specification of the amplifiers across VAG RCD310, RNS310, RCD510 and RNS510 (Swing, Amundsen, Bolero, Columbus) are identical. But they are made by different manufacturers including different versions of the same model so there are slight tonal differences between the units but nothing a tweek of the Treble, middle or Bass should sort.

The biggest difference for the big touchscreen units is the useability of the MDI if you have it. I'd go as far as to say it's virtually useless on a Swing if you have a large capacity hard drive or ipod. On the bigger touch screens the mdi is a joy to use.

As for Nav, the VAG units work and route OK but I find Tomtom IQ routing faster and more reliable.

As for traffic, the TMS system is a joke frankly, get better reults listening to traffic reports on the radio. Tomtom's HD Traffic is as paid for subscription service but it's excellent and saves me hours every month.

So yes we have ordered Amundsen in the Fabia for it's mdi interface and satnav functionality for my wife but if I use the fabia for work I'll be using the Tomtom.

Cheers

Just also remember that with the VAT deal the SAT nav was £ 400.

For that money its a great unit and really enhances the IPOD experience with the car. The NAV part is fine although wont argue that a TomTom is better.

It makes the car feel a little more classy.

If you went for a Ford even the SAT Navs are usually £ 1,000 area i believe.

Its a very nice unit for the money. Anyone thats getting DAB and the plus unit will have it even better.

If i was offered this unit again on another car at the £ 400 price mark I would take it every time without fail.

not arrived yet then paul?should be with you thursday

It's less if you wanted the maxidot (which I did) so take the maxidot price off the nav on the vat free offer and it's £275!!

No brainer for factory nav with massively improved iPod functionality and instruction relayed to the dash (no looking down it's on the maxidot)
