Daytime Running Lamps law

Featured Replies

its my understanding that all new cars registered after Feb 2011 must be fitted with daytime running lamps

this means my new Octavia (the 25% off deal) should have them as the earliest it will be registered is April 2001 (its getting built this week i think)

so the question is, will it? has anyone seen an Octavia with daytime running lamps yet? just wondering where they've put them, or if they've just made the existing sidelights always on

  • No, because DRL's are not mandatory on the Octavia MkII as it was type approved prior to the legislation being introduced (2011).

Yes, vRSs have separate DRLs and others seem to have extra bulbs housed in the foglights.

ive seen the vrs ones, they look very smart, but mine is just SE spec and won't even have foglights

From the picture above i think its DRL's are a sidelight bulb, have seen a few new octavia's with the sidelight bulb on with no tail lights on.

Only a requirement for new models released onto the market, I think.

Fabia models without fogs have a switch in the fuse box that allows the headlights (dimmed) to double as DRLs- listed in latest technical update for Fabia on Skoda Auto Main site. HAvent had a look at Octy but presume the same arrangement will apply

just as a quick question i have ordered a vrs which has the drl's. do they come on themselves or do you have to turn them on?

i dont have auto lights ordered so wondered how they came on during the day or do you just turn to sidelights and they come on?

cheers

Octavia DRLs need to be enabled by a dealer update or VCDS. Once enabled they can be toggled on and off via Maxidot or a sequence of presses on the wiper stalk.

thanks for that, when they are enabled is that them on everytime you drive the car? i mean at night do they stay on with the headlights on? i have seen some cars with them on at night also. if they are on all the time does the bulbs last long?

cheers

You'll see the DRLs housed in the front fog light unit, as a separate bulb. (Image)

Not happened to me, but Plod has been known to pull over Octavia drivers and try tick them off about front fogs being on when not required. A quick chat whilst pointing out that no other lights are on will clear up any misunderstanding. (Hopefully)

Reply to above - They go off the minute you select side lights/main beam, otherwise on all the time unless deactivated via Maxidot. Don't know bulb life expectancy however.

On my previous MKII Superb, with the older style fog light, the DRL's were the headlight bulb which was on, but not as bright as usual. So I am guessing that it will be the headlight bulb.

thanks, yeah i kind of thought police would maybe pull people you over with the drls to be honest thinking they are front fogs on.

On the VRS the DRLs automatically dim when you put the headlights on and if you select sidelights then they are the dimmed DRLs (the sidelights in the healight unit do not work on the VRS even though there is a bulb in the housing).

The bulb in the housing is your main beam.

On the vRS the DRLs are enabled whenever you turn the ignition on but can be switched off within maxidot. On selecting sidelights the DRL LEDS go off and sidelights come on instead and these are part of the DRL LED unit and not part of the main headlamp cluster.

I wasn't aware the DRL's turned off when lights are turned on with the VRS.

I could have sworn I'd seen a VRS at night with main beams and DRL's on.

DRL's on the vRS are always on unless they are turned off using the procedure outlined in the manual.

No lights on, DRL's full brightness.

Auto, side or dipped headlights on results in the DRL's dimming.

As mentioned earlier the DRL's on the vRS double up as side/parking lights meaning the usual 5W bulbs in the main headlight cluster are redundant.

Even if you disable the DRL's they are still used for the side/parking light function.

DRL's are only law on brand new models.

As the Octavia is already in production Skoda's decision to fit them is their own, not enforced.

The S and SE do not get DRL's as they do not have the front fog lights. It is still possible to activate DRL's on these models but they use the dipped headlights instead of dedicated bulbs.

Thanks for confirming that, looks like no DRL's for me then

with the DRLs, cars without foglights will make use of the high-beam running at 20-30% power.

just like the mk6 golfs.

vRS DRL's are always on, you dont have to do owt, they dim by half when you stick your sidelights on.

The bulb in the housing is your main beam.

On the Fabia Vrs the main beam is in a different section in the head light cluster. The DRL's are turned off by a swiitch under the steering wheel.

The "Spare" sidelight buld does not work on the Vrs but does on all the other Fabia's, even those fited with DRL's

+1

I have Sidelight bulbs in the housing - look like Philips bluevision bulbs and they don't come on under any circumstances.

No disrespect but the spare bulb in my headlight housing is not the main beam. I have changed both my main and dimmed beam bulbs so know which is which. The bulb is in the sidelight position but does not come on (do not even think it is wired up in the VRS) no matter what the DRLs are set too. My sidelights are the DRLs dimmed.
