Reverse parking sensors

Featured Replies

I've had my Skoda for just over 3 months and i'm having a bit of a problem reverse parking as I find it very tricky to judge how far i'm from objects behind me. Unfortunately i've already reversed into a very low bolard in a not so well lit pub car park! :'( The good news is the damage is only a tiny quarter of an inch paint scratch. Ok to get to the point, i've never had any reverse sensors on any of my previous cars. I had a look for some online but a lot of them are very expensive :( The only place that sell some very cheap once but they do look very good are from ebay for £20! :) Now I know this sounds very cheap so has anyone else bought any from ebay or is it better to look elsewhere? Any recomendations would be helpful cheers.

I went for these.

Perfect colour match, easy to fit, near enough oem.

I am fortunate in that I did get parking sensors but I am with you all the way on how difficult it is to judge by eye, I can never tell ! I trust the beeps and just make sure visually that no pedestrians/animals/vehicles are nearby.

I've received them! They did an excellent job on the paint on them too. I now have the task to fit them!

Fitting is a piece of wee

:D

You can even keep the bumper on whilst doing it.

I thought it would be easy but my Skoda dealer has told me the saw drill that came with the sensors would crack the plastic?! I'd like to do this job myself as it would safe me a small fortune. On the other hand I don't want to crack my bumper either! Can a saw drill break the bumper or is it safe to use it?

I'm getting sensors fitted by my local Skoda dealer next week, a good bit more expensive than the ebay options :(

It will not crack the bumper.

The drill bit that comes with the kit is great. - drills a pilot and then the hole.

The bumper is made of strong plasticky bendy material - it wont crack.

Unless you use a chisel

:)

Would these be worth spraying yourself with cans or would it be a similar cost just to get them done by a bodyshop?

they advise not to spray them for the ones i got.

they do loads of colours though

The ebay ones are properly colour coded - send them your paint code and they spray them up perfectly and delivery in two or three days.

The drill bit will not crack the bumper at all, just go steady. As far as I'm concerned the only damage you can do is by not lining them up perfectly thus leaving wonky sensors, or by drilling too fast and possibly chipping the paint. Just go steady!

If you get stuck fitting them give me a shout - on the ebay ones there is no need to remove the bumper nor the rear seats and bolsters as per some other thoughts unless fitting fronts too.

Sam

So if you don't need to remove the bumper how do you get accces to run the sensor wires into the boot where I assume you then tap into the reverse light circuit?

you can reach up behind - just, and either drill through and reseal the existing blank grommet, or drill a new hole with new sealing grommet etc. It's tight, but do'able and saves the ballache of removing the bumper.

Cool. Thanks. I might have to get a set myself.

No need to remove bumper at all-there's space behind, accessible from under the centre of the bumper, where a towbar would mount. I ran the wires through beneath the bottom of the rear p/s light then refitted it. Put the beeper in the CD changer holder. 6 months with no bother-best £16 I spent on the car :)

The OEM sensor positions are in the thread I linked to above.

I think I know now what my next little mod will be!

Stick a piece of leccy tape over buzzer, sounds muuuuuuch better.

All fitted on passenger side below cluster.

How much do dealers charge for these fitting? I'm thinking of getting them for my FL octy. Do they integrate with the bolero display?

my stealer quoted £180 for aftermarket sensors or £230 for genuine skoda ones, neither were able to integrate with the bolero

Hmmmm I thought the genuine skoda OPS did integrate with the bolero/columbus, was it not the OPS they quoted for? I have been looking at kits such as these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-Reverse-Car-Parking-Sensor-OPS-RNS510-MFD3-Skoda-/190372746324?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2c53199454 but would need painting and someone to fit them too.

not entirely sure, but they did tell me they wouldn't integrate with the Bolero even tho the sensors themselves are identical. i suspect it must be possible tho

Well I ordered a set of parking sensors from Ebay which have now arrived. I can't yet work up the balls to drill holes in my back bumper yet though!

I couldn't face drilling my bumper, so I bought a 2 sensor kit in a cherry red colour and fitted them in the corners of the rear reflectors. So far so good....
