Skoda Superb Front Suspension

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have a skoda superb 2006 1.9 TDI with 160,000 miles on the clock .

The fault I find with the car is that the front suspension feels wobbly and not positive, The car past the mot about 2 months ago with no problems .

I was thinking with all the bushes at the front would they be getting old and have more movement than usual, the cars tyres are all wearing evenly.

And is the a good none genuine replacement front suspension kit available.

Regards

Chris

These cars give such a lot of problems with the crazy front suspension that there are lots of kits around - many of them junk.

Go round the whole lot and check all ball joints, including track rods for radial and axial play, and all of the kamikaze rubber bushes for separation and breakage. If you buy new parts, go for a recognised genuine Teutonic make and avoid at all costs Chinese Replacement Automotive Parts (C R A P) which are now being sold with German-sounding names in shiny boxes.

Your car will need new front dampers at the mileage covered - Bilsteins are amongst the best.

rotodiesel.

I second Bilstein Sports B6, fantastic ride, do not rust like Konis do, and lasted so far 80k+ and counting on my car, OEM ones lasted 15k.

If none of the 22 balljoints :dull: is obviously loose, and the bearings hold up fine, I would start with replacing shocks and associated parts (spring discs, upper mounts/bearings and the stretch bolts).

If you do not plan to run the car for much longer, than Sachs shocks can be had for much lower price, but they will not last anywhere near as long. OEM shocks are Sachs and lasted 15k miles on both my cars.

For the parts, original ones are best (and most expensive), but I find that Febi consistently produces very good alternatives and Febi parts are a lot less expensive than OEM, though not exactly cheap.

I have most of my Octavia's front suspension made out of Febi parts, and 3 years on, it is holding up just fine. I also use Febi brake discs on Superb (3rd set now waiting in the garage) and they are much better than OEM, do not warp, though they do peel a little (I use hard kevlar pads so to some extent rotor wear is expected).

I would agree totally with rotodiesel stay away from that Chinese S*** if it sounds cheap it cause it made cheap Febi seem to be one of the best aftermarket joints available but I have noticed lately that the genuine joints have become competitive in price At 160k on the clock you have done very well out of the original joints I had to replace mine at 90K

Hi all,

I have finally got round to checking the car and there is play in both of the inner tie rods,

I am going to take your advice and change both front shocks when I am working on the car.

Thanks for all your Help

Regards

Chris

There exist full suspension replacement kits incl all arms and bolts/nuts for Passats (B5 and B5.5) and for A4/A6, made by Febi, and they costs only as much as a set of front Bilsteins.

There are several part numbers for these kits, perhaps someone knows which one is right for the Superb?

I'm trying to replace the O/F front spring on my 2000MY Passat 4Motion - the N/S broke and the AA replaced it. My problem is, when I compress the spring nearly completely(!), there is still tension on the upper and lower spring platforms and it looks like the piston is hell bent on retracting into the damper, so never letting me release the load from the spring platforms. I have never seen this before as I'd expect any working two way damper to just offer resistance in both directions - well maybe I've seen this once before when a Land Rover damper wanted to fully extend (so that one was replaced). So, has anyone seen this before on a Superb/Passat and if this am I correct in thinking that its time for two new front dampers. I have levered around the upper platform and rubbers just to see if both ends have ended up getting "bonded" to the spring ends - but this is not the case - they can be levered clear. If I now remove the piston nut, I'd reckon that the piston would shoot down to its lower limit and the spring would jump up.

i would also like to know if there is a kit available that replaces all bushes and joints on the front suspension.

does this site not have a parts number database?

im wanting to renew my front suspension ie shocks, springs, bushes, joints etc.
