Octy TDI rear bushes

Featured Replies

Given that I just drive my car in a normal fashion (have covered over 180k miles), I am attempting to cure some strange tyre wear the bushes are next on my list of things to change (and then I can stick on some new tyres).

As far as I can see the options are:

- Standard Octy bushes

- Fabia vRS bushes

- Polybush (or similar)

I assume they get more expensive the further down the list I go... but is there any real benefit? I don't go racing about, so I don't want to spend a fortune. I realise the Octy and Fabia ones are probably a bit harder to get in (but I can easily make up something to help guide them into place).

I am planning on changing them next weekend, so need to order them shortly to ensure I get them in time (or collect from TPS in Yeovil).

Thanks,

Matt

Superpro poly bushes.

They are a little more expensive, but will last forever and never soften over time-giving better handling, steering feel and stability under braking.

Steve

I'd probably stay with standard. Poly bushes can make the ride hard and crashy.

Don't know about the Fabia vRS ones though.

I have the Super Pro ones and I don't find them harsh or crashy.

I've driven Mk.1 TDis with both new standard bushes and with SuperPro poly bushes.

IMHO, there is little difference between the two.

I'd go for the fabia vrs ones - plenty of good write ups on mkvi forums about them, also cheapish and probably durable - seems to be the same part fitted to cupra anyway

good enough for them - good enough for me!

Sounds far enough to me.... anyone got a part number? I'll start searching too - if I find them, I'll post here.

EDIT: I think it is this: 6Q0 501 541E (good old Google!)

Cheers.

*grin* that was the first page which google gave me! It looks like I posted my Edit the same time as you posted this link :-)

Is there actually any need to replace the various nuts and bolts?

I had to cut one of the bolts to get it out because it hit the petrol tank:

Fair enough..... I could replace those ones, but is there a need to replace the ones on the bottoms of the shocks?

You don't have to but it's recommended in the service manual.

The local dealer here said they'd never replaced any :)

I had a look at my Haynes manual and that seemed to suggest they should be changed.... As long as I don't have to cut my bolts.... I'll get a price for them tomorrow....

They will be quite rusty and they may take a bit of effort to loosen so I would change them, I did when I did the bumpstops on my car, they only cost a couple of quid, but I think the dealer didn't have them in stock and had to order them.

for convenience I'd get new bolts - imagine the hassle if one is stripped or breaks - as was earlier said, a minute cost in comparison to the hassle it could cause.

you can also get oem fabia bushes from vwspares http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=1339

I changed my shocks a couple of years ago, so they might be ok to undo..... I'll get everything from TPS in Yeovil I think... But I guess no harm in changing them rather then finding I am stuck half way through the job...

I was under the impression that I could visit TPS and get parts... but I just phoned them and as I am not a garage they don't want to deal with me... :-(

So that kinda of leaves me with getting the bits via Skoda, who have quoted me £55.06 (inc VAT) for the 2 bushes and the 2 x shock nuts & bolts and 2 x bush nuts & bolts. The vRS bush is £21.18 inc VAT each, so that means they are charging £12.70 for 4 nuts and bolts.... seems rather excessive to me.....

Does that seem a reasonable sort of price?

Thanks,

Matt

Ballcocks, I was in TPS in Derby on Monday and they happily sold me a gasket - but I think it was the wrong gasket!

But only on silver cars :-)

As I need the bits for this weekend, I guess I'll have to get them via Skoda and investigate Yeovil TPS at a later date.... Maybe if I just rolled up at the counter they might have served me, but on the phone I was told to go away

My local TPS wouldn't always serve me, although I think it was one particular person who was being a jobsworth as the other guys would always sell stuff. I don't normally have any problems now.

just get a cash on collection account - phone em and get one set up, quote part numbers and get a price etc etc

Too late on this occasion, I have had to pay dealer prices. Will look into a cash-on-collection account for the future though.
