getting itchy feet

Featured Replies

Hi all

I love the vRS and the skoda brand, however im just getting itchy feet and am considering a change.

I like cars that are a bit special and diferent, but performance and quality and reliability are important.

Looking at 2004 saab 9-3 aero (210bhp) and the old Merc E190 cosworth's (2.3 or 2.5) Merc is half the cost for insurance than that of the vRS!

Has anyone had any experience of either of these? good or bad

Many thanks

I work with a guy that had a saab 95 hot aero (220bhp) i think. His was a 2001 he loved it, was very nice to drive and quite quick good for overtaking on a a or b road. He then crashed it into a fence and wrote it off lol.

He replaced it with a saab 93 sport think they are 2l turbo's (150bhp). Its a 2004 and it is nice. He can't fault it at all very realiable he has had it 2 years and hasn't replaced anything on it bar service items. I have had a shot of his car and they do drive really nicely very comfy more of a cruiser. They are a bit to bland and lack character i think though. I wouldnt swap my vrs for his saab. But as i said his aint the aero 93 but it is a nice car.

One of my mates has a nicely modified Merc 190E 1.8. He loves it, and it is a very nicely proportioned car.

The only drawbacks are that because of it's age it obviously drinks petrol and rusts!

Having said that, I'd have one over a modern Saab.

When i drove an Areo back from birmingham i almost crashed it numorus times, there was just too much power for the car. Dry straight road at 40 in third, put my foot down and it was just torque steer was all over the place lol. Didn't corner too well either with little feed back, just felt like you wasn't driving it.

Merc 190 is good, getting used to the gearbox with the dog-leg first doesn't take long and they handle great, not as fast as the modern stuff so seems slow in comparison. Rust and wear and tear are the biggest issues. Found it was not a good idea to start drifting my m8's one when having a test drive tho :giggle:

My dad has a 93 Aero 2.0 turbo, nice car imo. Its an auto and goes quite well.

Seats are nicer than the vRS as well. They're smaller than the vRS though. I'd miss the back seat space and boot space.

Old skool rules! :giggle::thumbup:

I've been thinking of going back to the old school aswell but my choice is either a cavalier turbo 4x4 or sierra sapphire cosworth B)

capri 2.8 i would love another but the wife says no

Have you had yours remapped or any other mods? Really makes the difference and you can still be economical with the fuel.

You need to put your foot down mate! I have a 2.8 turbo lurking too!

you'll pay over 6k for a reasonable cossie si!

Agreed!

I've always hankered after a cav turbo after owning numerous gsi's so I think I would probably sway that way if I were to go for it

I was lucky - mine cost me £4k when I bought it in 2002 so prices were still sensible. These days they're rarer, though you can get the ropey ones less!

I always liked the look of the Cav turbo's, though a GSi with a turbo engine fitted always seemed to look better for some reason.

Again I guess both are quite rare!

It's not a Janspeed turbo is it?

Now that's nice!

Got a mk1 xr4i sitting in the drive if anyones interested, willing to let her go if someone promises to do her up and put her back on the road.

The merc Cossie is a good car but hard to find in good nik, or a good colour and would be, if you could get a decent one a good investment.

Plus its got a high reving engine and driven from the correct end, the rear!

But its torque is high up the rev band and coming from a VRS you might not like it!

I dont know what the exact figure is but it will be somewhere alone the lines of the M3 and give full torque at 5500rpm!

Nice car, had one once and wished id never got rid of it! lol

As for the Aero!! ummmmm

Firstly i would never buy a car named after a chocolate bar with holes!!

And secondly

its a GM car so the suspension and chassis is a Vectra!!! Nuff said!

And lastly its a bit of a wet lemon.

Now that's nice!

Talk to me

Had 2 mk1 4x4's and a mk2 running a 2.8 on a big weber carb and a short shift box (was huge amounts of fun wet or dry :giggle: ) back in the day

Has anyone ever had any experience with vw golf v6 4motions? There is a nice one come up for sale in a small garage up by me always fancyed one of these (can't see it being any better than a vrs though) just wondering if anyone has had one?

My mate is also looking at these to replace his golf gti turbo with just wondering if anyone has had one :-)

Yeap had a VR6!

They are okay but not a really quick car as some people are led to believe

Was it a golf mk3 vr6 you had mate or the newer 2.8v6 4motion?

I had a corrado vr6 they are quick but not as quick as what people think. I doubt if there as fast as a remaped vrs??

They sound better than a vrs tho :giggle:

Can't beat the sound of a vr6 above 3rpm :-)

Vr6 engines need a turbo bolted on the side lol, that would be some beast vr6 turbo in a vrs :-) lol
