How do you touch up stone chips? (best technique)

Featured Replies

I use a cocktail stick and judge the amount to put on end to slightly overfill hole as the paint invariably

shrinks on drying, hoping to judge it just right. I let the paint 'dry' a little before applying hoping to

counteract the shrinkage.

Sometimes I get it right but not always.

If the paint ends up a little proud (as with paint touch up brush) I am tempted to smooth with very fine wet and dry

but I am prevented for fear of damaging the surrounding paint/clear coat and making a pin hole into a large noticable area.

What's your technique that works on the typical bonnet stone chip often not much more than 1-3mm diameter?

Never had much success using the Halfords type touch up paint brush applicator.

Noticed Skoda touch up colours can be off match which is to be expected.

Also what technique to apply clear coat?. Have often not applied this as can spoil final finish if the initial hole

is small and difficult to fill effectively with 2 types of paint without over filling and making a bigger mess.

Generally don't use primer as impossible to fill small hole with 3 types of paint if metallic paint.(use rust killer

if rust noticed).

Are these advertised mobile paint repair outfits any good at doing a more professional job and worth the expense?

Any general advice please?

I use a very fine artists paint brush in the same way you use your cocktail stick. It's ok for small chips.

I generally use the skoda touch up pen or the Vw depending which car i'm fixing and use the supplied brush with the smallest amount of paint on it I can with a quick dab (sometimes a second dab if it's a deeper chip) slightly overfilling the damaged area , then after it's dry polish it back to flatten then leave it.I tried the top coat one time and did not like the finish so now it's just the paint.

Hope this helps

Peter

When Scarlet had her foils fitted I got a small bottle of paint, (with brush applicater) from the bodyshop.

When I touched up a stone chip on the bonnet I put too much paint on so used T cut to smooth it down, this worked fine.

Oh, and the foils are fine now, after 3 attempts!!
