New windscreen

Featured Replies

After 3 failed attempts by Autoglass i got my new windscreen in the furby today (brick chipped and cracked the screen).

My worry is its the wrong one.

On their 1st attempt the fitter said he had the wrong screen, 2nd attempt another screen but no scuttle clips, now the 3rd attempt he brought the 1st screen again! BUT its different to the OE screen, the new one has a rubber seal all the way around which lips into the windscreen opening/A-pillar, whereas the OE screen had no rubber seal. Both were bonded in, but its the seal that worries me because the glass with the seal must be slightly smaller than the OE to fit.

Has anyone had there windscreen replaced or noticed the same as me?

Had mine done last November by Auto Windscreens, they fitted an aftermarket screen but its ok. Any differences in size are compensated by the sealant, it don't matter. As long as you can't see any gaps or the edge of the glass, inside or outside the car it'll be alright. If it leaks after heavy rain then there is something wrong but the windscreen company will cover that on warranty.

Last year I had a windscreen replaced by Autoglass. The replacement is made by Pilkingtons and I can't tell the difference between it and the OEM Skoda one.

You cant see the difference between the screens unless you put them side by side, same patterns and that, its just this extra rubber that was on the screen and now touches the car. I cant see any gaps and it looked like a tight fit. Ill get a photo.

I've had two replacement windscreens by them and all ok!! Yes all of mine had the rubber lip/seal around the glass....could be extra waterproofing as main is the thick sealant which is used to glue the windscreen onto the frame!! But post a good detailed photo and i'll take a look! B)

I have a nasty chip in my screen, in the A zone too so MOT fail. How much will I be looking for the screen and labor?

Thanks.

Harry.

Insurance should cover that, Excess for glass is usually £25. May be repaired for free if it is no bigger than a pound coin. Ring your insurance company for advice.

Agree about phoning the insurance company about a repair, as it may be free under the terms of the policy (and shouldn't alter your premium next year or NCD - didn't for me, anyway), although I think you're more looking at £50-75 glass excess from the ~20 policies I looked at when taking mine out(!).

If you're replacing it yourself, the screen for an Octavia with rain sensor is approx £135 (RRP) from Skoda, plus labour to fit it (my parents had the one on their Octavia replaced as part of the agreement to purchase it, and asked how much the part was out of curiosity).

I asked when I was there, if I can remember, it worked out out as roughly £350 for a new screen. However if you go through your insurance company, you only pay the excess. The amount will depend on your policy, mine was £75. It does not effect your NCD, and I'm not sure if it is classed as a claim when you renew.

Sorry for the late reply guys. Here is what i mean about the seal, my old one (original) never had this rubber surround, was bonded straight to the frame. This new one is still bonded but has the extra bit of rubber.

Yeah that looks just like mine...they must have improved them like I said, so no worries then!! B)

They come with a seal!

The original would have had a seal also!! Its just the seal protrudes a bit! You could push it down with a big screwdriver

Completely normal! are you a problem customer?

When we compared the two screens the original skoda one definetly had no seal, we put both screens next to each other and you could see they were different.

Even 2 of the technicians before said they wouldnt fit it because it was the wrong one. The seal wont push down anymore, its down and as tight as it can get. If other people have had this type of screen then its obviously fine

pass don't know but i had 2 replaced on 2 fabia vrs's

never batted an eyelid a window and seal is a window and seal to me

it doesnt look the best! Not chipped, just poor manufacture i think. Never noticed it before i took the pic, ill have a look tomorrow the pic might make it look worse

looks guy jerry to me

Had mine replaced a few months back, no seal like yours fitted to it.

Mine looks like that (has a sunken rubber seal between the A-pillar and the glass). As far as I'm aware, it's got the original windscreen in it (no mention in the set of bills that came with the car, has a fair few chips on it, commensurate with a 7-year old windscreen) ...

Agree the corner doesn't look good though!

If its a genuine skoda screen it will be saint gobain and have skoda and some numbers etched in the bottom corner. The differences must just be due to different manufacturers, the screen is fine i think, its not chipped just poor finishing
