Handlings a pile of ...................

Featured Replies

Octy VRS 03 plate.

I appreciate its a 8 year old car, done 90k and quite big compared to say a MX-5 but... i expected more handling wise

What is everybody doing to generally improve the handling?

Aftermarket racks?

Aftermarket springs?

Aftermarket shocks?

Experience with lowering the vehicle?

And what to expect basically because the wallow and understeer in my opinion is excessive to what it could be.

When your mapping the cars and getting say 40+ bhp more, how are you tackling this problem?

I would check the condition of the various bushes on the suspension first.

A lot of people have fitted a rear anti roll bar which seems to improve handling whilst being relatively cheap.

vrs in standard setupis shocking

but once the bits that need doing are done it can be one of the best handling cars

I must be the odd one out on here cos i think my vrs over steers like mad, it did it in standard form and it still does it with coilovers and s3 upper and lower braces on,

Ive bought a full set of Superflex bushs for it and a set of s3 bottom arms, so we will see if this improves things

Correct!

And since when?

Its driven from the wrong end for a start, a standard E92 BMW diesel would put it all over most modified Skodas!!! :giggle:

And since when?...

Think that should have been " best FWD handling cars " :giggle:

doubtlessly someone will take issue with that

Lol!!!!! Do you work for super pro??? :giggle:

Should do, I've spent enough $ of their bushes :o

( 4x4s' have lots and lots of bushes ... )

have to say my last car had no issues showing bmw's who was boss but it was a properly set up car

but i was comparing fwd cars.

danny have you been in a properly setup vrs yet???

i now drive awd and i still miss the vrs i had before !!!!

yup that one of Amateurstuntmans was a true beast. I am adding to it by way of a 28mm neuspeed and TT hub assemblies lol.

Oh and LCR Brembos

these cars are ok std but only if you havnt driven anything semi decent.

If I was you Id get the bushes looked at and prob replaced

Get a whiteline 22/24mm rear ARB

That should keep you happy for a bit lol.

then when that wears off,

S3/TT/R32/LCR Steering Rack

R32 Front ARB

S3 Upper/lower Braces

28mm RARB

TT hub assy

TT cast Wishbones+ SuperPRO caster bush

and the BEST BIT a Quaiffe LSD.

that should make it a very nice car to drive lol

Forgot to say, Weitec coilovers or KWv1 or v3 to lower it a tad and use the TT hub assys to push the wishbones back down for max track width.

Think that might be stretching it a bit far lol! I have dispensed of many an unsuspecting Beemer driver and I am just running weitecs without uprated arb (yet!)

Superpro rear axle bushs fitted this morning,

Old bushs removed and new fitted in 2 hours, wish id done them earlier now, not had chance to take it for a proper drive yet but can feel difference already,

Just need to get s3 arms cleaned up now and new bushs in and get some ball joints ordered

yup that one of Amateurstuntmans was a true beast.

The 5 mins I had in it were impressive I must say, grip level was awesome

 Did one side of mine this morning, but sadly do not have your super human DIY skills as it took me 3 hours :(

No idea whether it is better, worse or no different, as i haven't driven the car since, but hoping it will be worth it once i've spent another 3 hours doing the other side.

Haha mechanic by trade so am quiet good with a spanner

With regards to the rear anti roll bar option...

I've heard it is one of the biggest pains in the arses to fit. If that is true what makes it so difficult to fit?

If it is not difficult to fit then just ignore me :)

IT IS a pain in the ar5e to fit on the 4x4 but I thought it was an easy fit on the vrs as it just bolts to the beam?

  • Author

'Just bolts to the beam?'

Yeh heard that one before haha...........3 days later

Why not sell the octavia and buy a small french hot hatch if you want handling? Octavias are boats and in standard trim arent the best at taking corners at speed, but then again they weren't designed to be a corner hogging sports car

RARB is straightforwards to fit, just make sure you have all the bits you need first (I needed some domed nuts to replce the normal hexes on the beam as the latter fouled the new ARB - I forget what size they are but I expect someone will know. I'd guess M5 and about 20mm from what I recall, but don't quote me on that) as it's a royal pain to discover bits missing when your mode of transport is in bits! I had to do a bit of bending with the brackets (on the Neuspeed one anyway) to get them around the beam, but it wasn't a big issue.

'buy a small french hot hatch' This is possibly a worse comment than the diesel one lol

French .... yeh ... kinda speaks for itself, the car wont be running long enough to make it to the corner let alone go around it :p

Made just good enough for the job at the time of manufacture. and designed to fall apart as fast as possible just after the warranty runs out lol.

Ever worked on a french car over 5 years old? just have alot of replacement bolts handy.

sounds like a winner!

:)

Edited by Milkybadger

lol,

sounds about right there

Having seen some of the little French cars going around Combe at the weekend I can see why people rate them, they were keeping up with some much faster machinery. There was a little 106 screaming round B)
